IA here

Hi Lisa!

Welcome to BYC!!! I'm closer to Central Iowa, pretty far away from you! Wish you were closer!

Where in TX are you from? I moved up here from Corpus Christi in 1989.

Trish

This is great being able to communicate with folks who love critters.
pbjmaker, people from Greenfield go to Des moinse all the time, some drive back and forth everyday. I go to IA city to the dc. went last friday. We went through the big D My hubby likes to go to bass pro and drool. I let you know when I can head that way again, I would love to have those eggs you mentioned.
What kind of critters do you have?

Trish, I grew up outside of Houston, ( pasadena ) It is a stinky place with lots of chemicle plants.
But all of my life I wanted to live in the country and grow my own food. Stupid me I married a city boy and was stuck there. We got into a big fight because I wanted out of Houston. During this fight he told me that he wanted to be a school teacher. A light went off in my head. I told him If I put him through school he would move us to the country. I did, he graduated in dec. 96 we moved to Sweetwater TX. That is west TX kinda a desert but I loved it I had my place in the country. I moved here alone 2 years ago, Sometimes I miss the desert, but when I go there I miss IA more.

Thanks for the conversation!!! Have a great day Lisa

Lisa - I will save you some eggs whenever you let me know you need/want some. I have chickens (too many right now), 3 dogs and two cats. One of our chickens thinks she is a parrot or something. She won't hang out with the other chickens and has a cage inside where she sleeps at night. She comes to the back door and waits to be let in her "giant coop" (the house). Yesterday I found her new nesting spot since she won't lay eggs where the other chickens are. It was in our "project" boat. She had made a nest in the tarp. Now she will go find a new spot. She moves it everytime we discover her stash.

I will be entering her in the fair this year. Don't ask me how we let her get so spoiled. Eric (mrandmrschickens) can tell you - it's his fault!

That is a really neat storie, I wil tell my hubby that one. He got yelled at by the nieghboor for letting the hens follow him onto the front porch.
If you put some fake eggs in her nest and take out the real ones she might not move them.
I believe that chickens can not see in the dark, when i put newly featherd out chicks in the hen house. They go out into the yard and will not come back in the house at night unless there is a light on. Also I can go in the hen house at night and just pick them up, they do not move.

I just talk to my step daughter she said she neds to go to Des moinse soon, so go ahead and hold some eggs out.
Do you want some of my eggs? I also have bunches of leaf lettuce that I could bring. I have babbie rabbits but none old enough to leave mama just yet. Thanks lisa

I have 25 juveniles plus 19 adults and more on the way. I have all my young roosters listed on craigslist right now. I have three ppl who want them so far. I'll see if anyone actually shows up. I also think I have my gold comets sold. Now I just have to sell my d'uccles.

I will try to get you a dozen eggs in the next couple of days. Do you want any banty eggs?

I do not need any bantys, we had some last summer we enjoed watching them. 1 of them froze I think ,and a fox got the little hen I think. My hubby loved your hen story. Lisa

Anyone get tornado warnings? I had just gone out to check my chickens and I heard a siren, but it was one tone and lasted forever so I thought it was something else, but when it started to stop it sounded like the usual siren and then a recording said there was a tornado warning and to take shelter

so I grabbed my few chickens and put them in the basement and watched the news

I get very paranoid/freaked out about tornadoes.

Heard Muscatine got hit with a tornado though.

Nothing here. Dad saw a rotating funnel while we was out at the grocery store but I don't think it ever touched ground. We didn't even get any rain. I've got all the critters out at the moment and and ready to race to put them in the barn if needed. I am so mad I bought a rabbit yesterday at Burlington and didn't look close enough. It is fixed

and they didn't tell me. I was going to use him as a breeder buck on my doe rabbit. Oh well! I guess he's just a pet and I learned a lesson to make sure and check before I buy any others there at Burlington. I am in love with my new goat and my two little kittens. I managed to come home without a single new bird. Wish it hadn't rained us out. The lighting was awful.

Hi Everyone,

I am fairly new here and just found this thread. I am new to chickens too. We just started our layer chicks in April and have a batch of Cornish X going too. I live between Winterset and Creston, southwest of Des Moines about 45 miles give or take. We live in a small rural town, I wish it was the country. Just wanted to say hi to everyone!
