I have used red lights in the past but right now am using an OLD brooder light with two 60 watt bulbs in it. Two of the chicks in there could go outside and be fine, they are weeks older than the rest but the other four are newbies. Of my two chicks that are outside, one is an EE fully feathered in and decent size. The other is a silkie chick who while fully feathered is really tiny for it's age. S/he is not much bigger than the two in the basement but is about a month older.

I need to build them a new brooder today, the one they are in is too small for them.

So much to do and what am I doing - dinking around on the computer.

I usually use red lamps in my brooders to prevent picking, but I have used both. Will be again soon actually! I have an incubator going due to hatch on Halloween

I bought 2 Langshans and 3 Australorps and had them cooped separately so I thought I'd collect the eggs and see if I could hatch some more. I know the Australorps were running with some gorgeous roosters. So I figured since I was hatching I'd make the most of it and added Icelandic and BCM shipped eggs. Started with 50, weeded out a bunch of clears and so far have 9 Icelandic, 6 BCM and 6 Australorp/Langshans developing. I must be insane!

I won't begin to tell you how many chicks i have in the brooder. It's crazy. Have some in the hatcher too. Added more to the bator and still more on standby.....
Those icelandics are a rare breed becoming more popular. they sound interesting.

No chicks for me this late in the year ever again. The web site is not yet up for the Eastern Iowa Poultry show. If you want to show and have not received a catalog PM me and I will get you the contact information. Will you be at Crossroads?

My incubators have been off for a while, but I am still taking advantage of broodies. Red bulbs help us here also.

We're building more coops this weekend. It will be nice to have a place for more breeds. As well as grow out pens for juveniles. Raising juveniles seems to be half of what I do, since so many want started pullets.

I keep building pens too. I've got a bunch of roosters going to the butcher tomorrow, so hopefully it will quiet down a bit and the poor hens can have a rest

I have a bunch locked up but that just leaves the young ones the opportunity to be more bold! So hard to decide which ones to cull though! I love my beautiful EE's but I've got so many pretty purebreds too. Must choose......

No, I did not plan well enough Craig. I am going to Lincoln and then Iowa City. My summer was sadly crazy, mixed up this year and many things had to be set aside.
Do any of you know Art Reibers brother? I think it's his brother anyway. he was at the state fair but I no longer have an exhibitors list. I need to contact him somehow to ask a question. I cannot remember his name or where he lives.

Thanks Trish; gonna see how I can make this into a sign for the yard for the urchins on halloween!
The street on the West and South sides of our house, (yes, we are fortunate to pay taxes for a corner lot) are like the honey holes in town for the kids. Many people think our house is an apartment building, so we get kids ringing the bell on the back of the house, then coming around to the front!

Washed the birds I am taking to Crossroads yesterday. I always keep forgetting how much work it is to get birds ready for a show. And they have no chance of winning more than their class. Washing birds in the fall and winter stinks! Have to deliver 3 pairs of Columbians to Crossroads so that will leave some room in the SUV to bring back whatever I decide to buy.
