IA here

I finally found the Iowa thread! I'm in Manly, Iowa and raise Iowa Blues, Easter Eggers, and I have a start in Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas.

I don't suppose someone has a silkie pullet they're trying to get rid of around my area do they? I have some bantam cochins to partial trade and Golden Sebright pullets for trade. I'm also heading to the Ames area next weekend and the Rochester area soon after that. Thanks!

It's too bad you don't live closer east. I'm on the iowa/Illinois border, and there's a guy in Illinois that sells silkies, frizzles, etc., and my brother told me yesterday that he's practically giving them away now, just to get rid of the rest of his chicks for the year. I'm debating weather to go there this week myself. I want to add two more silkies and a frizzle, just for fun, but I don't really have the room, or the time to raise them up right now. Probably just going to have to wait till spring. It's going to be hard though, as I drive by his house on my way to my folks.

I have a question.  I'm switching my laying flock to a dual-purpose flock.  I'm going to have a few dark Cornish hens, some light and buff brahma hens, and light brahma roo, and eventually want to add some speckled Sussex hens.  I will also have room for four silkies for setting.  My goal in this endeavor is to have eggs, but also be able to hatch my own chicks for meat.  And then of course, replace my stock.  If I have these breeds all together, will the second, third, fourth, etc. generation be sterile because they're mixed or will they still be able to procreate?  I've never done this before.  I know that some breeds, like the sex-links are sterile because they're cross-bred.  But I don't know much about these breeds in this regard.

Thanks,
Emily.

Hi Emily,
No I don't believe you would have problems with sterility, you birds would just be mixed breeds.

Where is this guy? I'm going to be traveling so I might have to check him out!

You won't have any problem with sterility, and actually even sex links aren't sterile, they just don't breed true. This means if you hatch their fertilized eggs they won't look like their parents. It sounds like you have a good plan, just be aware it takes those big brahmas a long time to mature! One thing is for sure home raised birds taste the absolute best

Hello all! I'm up here in Spencer, Ia! dont have an chickens yet, but hoping to move to the country this year and get some Buff Orpingtons in the spring! Anyone else around here?

Yes, a couple of us on this thread. I live in Milford and another chickener lives in Sioux Rapids. There is another person uses the name "Boxermom", from Spencer also, but have not seen any posts from her in quite some time. Did you check out the poultry at the Clay County Fair? We had a few birds there. If I can be of any help locating some birds, please let me know. I know some folks North of Lakefield, on Hwy 86, just South of the Hwy 60 junction, that raise huge Buff Orps., big enough to pull a wagon! And I mean huge!
We raise bantams up here except for a few young Iowa Blues, another breed you may want to check into.

Please PM me if I can be of any help.

Hi All!! My husband and I are new to both BYC and Iowa. We are one hour north of Davenport. We have a farm out in the country with cattle, horses and chickens. We have about 100 chickens. We are currently hatching our first batch of chicks this week to replace our older hens. We have referred to BYC many times for help and finally we decided we just needed to join! We look forward to chatting with all you nice folk!

Ok so I am looking for local advice here. Anyone near the davenport area have either Lavender Ameraucanas or Norwegian Jaerhon chickens? Or know of a reputable place to look into getting them? Any bit of info helps! Thanks!

Sorry I don't. I have hatched lavender AMs from shipped eggs from Crystal Creek here on BYC.

If anyone is looking for bantam Cochin pairs or Golden Sebright pullets we have some available! Need to get rid of these to make room for our Iowa Blues and Ameraucanas.

They are nice quality, I can send PM pictures if interested.
