IA here

OMG there IS an iowa page! Whew, I was starting to worry about my sanity! I have some leghorn mixes, a couple EE's, and I'll soon be getting a handful of Iowa blues for a 4h project and keeping the breed going. I am located about 20 minutes from iowa city if anyone will be interested in hatching eggs or day-old chicks! Super glad I'm not the only iowan.

Hi Abby! I'm about 30 miles S of IC with a small flock of IA Blues and some others! Welcome to the thread! It's kind of quiet. : ) I still need to put my Blues in breeding pens. Been hatching out some Norwegian Jaerhons this month. And a couple IABs.

Welcome! This thread is starting to get a lot of Iowa Blue fans on it :) I'm hatching weekly now.

I have been hearing a lot about Iowa Blues on here. Are they good egg production birds? I'm looking to get more good egg production birds, like leghorns and red stars, but they are kind of boring to look at after a while.

I love the look of the Iowa Blues, and live in Iowa, so would love to have a "homemade" bird.

Iowa Blues are a dual-purpose breed. They average around 6-7 pounds, often lay a brown egg, and may become broody. They originated in Decorah, Iowa and after hatcheries stopped selling them, the breed nearly disappeared. They are good foragers and not extremely flighty. Roosters are also good hawk fighters.

My Iowa Blues are improving each generation. They lay pretty well, but they are very broody in the summer, so they don't produce as much the black or red sex-links. They are great free rangers and fly well. I haven't seen roosters fight hawks, but witnessed two battles with hawks and hens, which the hen won both times :). I lost a lot of roosters one summer to the foxes, because they refuse to back down. Not too many girls lost that summer, so they did their job I guess

I'm hatching a lot right now, so let me know if I can help :)

South Central IA here! I have been away for a while but I am back to stay now! We have a small farm with Dairy Goats and Layers but are looking to add to it this year along with a large garden!

So who else has chick fever right now?? I'm ready for this cruddy, cold winter to be over. I've already got my birds divided up into their breeding groups and am setting my incubator up today and have been scouring the internet looking for Blue Laced Red Wyandottes but it looks like they're pretty much sold out everywhere (I know, I know.. should have put my order in a LONG time ago). Anyone in the northern half of the state breed BLRWs?
