I thought we were done with chicks here. My daughters blue Andalusian/spitzhauben mix showed up with 12 chicks. I guess the good thing is that almost covers all the chickens/ducks take by the fox/coyote this summer.

We did get our puppy. He is half great Pyrenees and half akbash. He is very adorable. We named him Bullet.

Looking forward to the Maquoketa Swap. I will be taking a lot of extra chicks. I think I have all the breeds figured out from my Sandhill order.

I saw a great number of amazing birds at the Iowa State Fair poultry competition during the last 4 days. "Linton" family from Sioux City took the greatest number of ribbons in many categories. I saw her buff orp rooster that must have been a direct descendent of a T-Rex -- huge!! I bought 3 bantam call ducks from her too... can't even visit the state fair without buying birds these days. LOL

I saw those buff orps. My husband said - Man - I thought "Tank" was huge - "What are those monsters!?!"

Tank is my black copper maran roo who is no light weight. The RIR were nice looking too - very dark.

Did you see the "Exhibition only showgirls?" I was not impressed by those.

What color were the call ducks you bought? I saw all those ducks/chickens for sale.

I'm not able to get to the fair this year -- did anyone get pictures of these prize winning birds?

I bought white call ducks, although I would have really liked snowy call ducks. Son hopes to show them next year at county fair. The 2 hens have black freckles on the bill so they are not SQ, but the male is SQ... so hopes are for good quality ducklings by spring. I've tried twice to incubate call duck eggs, but have been told that they are very difficult to hatch in an incubator. Had to resort to $15/each of adults to get our desired result. They are so small and squeaky compared to the mallards!

I saw the exhibition only showgirls.... I had the same opinion. Actually I saw a couple seabrights that I wouldn't have taken to show either with crooked toes & such. Diff strokes for diff folks. You should have taken "Tank" to the open show; although I'm not sure they are accepting marans, I saw no others.
