A friend of mine gave us her 4 hens as her coop wasnt really winter friendly, they all have frosbite on their Combs, so what does gangrene look like now that I need to watch for it?? All of our hens have pea Combs so we havent had to worry about it...granted it hasnt been -20 or more until this winter!!

I'm having frostbite issues too. I rub the combs and wattles with a petroleum based ointment like bag balm or vaseline to help prevent further problems. I have heard it can cause gangrene but I don't know how common that is. If there are open cracks or bleeding maybe you could use triple antibiotic ointment first. Good luck with them!

Wheat is hard to come by in Iowa. Not many farmers plant it here. You might have to order some online to get it. Or you can just watch the fields over the summer until you see some growing. It's pretty distinctive especially in Iowa. It's a lot lighter in color than oats and the head really gives it away.
