"Ears perk" Turkeys? I need a turkey. A hen. Or two. I have two toms and a hen. I think I might have problems with that ratio. Anyone know where I can find one?

I'm not sure where to find turkeys at this time of year. The tom I have I traded another guy a hen for last summer as I had 3 hens and no toms and he had an extra tom but needed a hen. I only have a trio but crossing my fingers I'll have some new ones this year if all works okay. Last spring the hens were laying eggs before I had a tom and then quit laying once I had the tom to get fertile eggs. The one turkey hen did go broody and hatch some chicken eggs so my fingers are crossed this year she will hatch out some turkeys now that the tom is here and that they are in love with each other.

Well things are looking good with the puppies already. I have one sold for sure and there are two people coming to look at them once they open their eyes and are getting around. That means the other dogs get to continue eating

Is it spring yet?

I love my child i love my child. keep in mind some of these are his 4H projects. I go to do chores and milk tonight and what do i find. nobody has water, no way 2 kids drank 2 gallons of water. hay bunk is empy 8 eggs yay only 2 frozen solid ( hit a tree and stayed together). oh and empty udders. so the turd didn't water, put in hay, collect eggs or look chicken door. and i'm pretty sure only fed 2 cup to 20 chickens. *breathing* so as i feed the flock and collect eggs 1 hen jumps on the egg basket and dumps it cracking 4 eggs, i gets eaten before i can grab it. so out of 8 only 2 made it to frig and no milk.

thank you for letting me vent.

want puppy pics when they get bigger. plzzzzzz

Will definately get more pics of the pups once they open their eyes. Maybe I will try for a family portrait. Oh wait she tore Jack (the dad) a new one today because he dared to cross her invisible line of death.

We've been up at the hospital tonight. Mike's mom is sick and they ended up putting her in ICU. SO if I'm not on much the next few days, that is why. I will have to go take care of her dogs/cats on top of our own. I'm glad her house is only a couple of streets over. I feel bad for the ICU nurses when she realizes she hasn't had a cigerette in 24 hours...

I do love my child. She came home, made sure the pups were warm and would even crawl under the coop to get chickens put to bed if I needed her too. As moody as she is at 16 - she's a pretty good kid. My MIL and I were talking earlier today about me wanting to take a vacation somewhere warm and she was like "Who would care for all the chickens and dogs" I told her Amber would - she was amazed. I think she thinks chickens are harder to take care of than they really are. Doubt she would chisel frozen poop, but she would make sure they got fed watered and put away.

My MIL and FIL had their dog put down a couple weeks ago and have already ordered a new puppy! My mil is sucking on an oxygen bottle 24/7, emphysema and macular degeneration (sorry about the spelling). She has not been out of the house since Thanksgiving. She has miles of oxygen tubing all over their house. Their former dog did not bother with it but we all know what puppies can do! My FIL is not in much better shape, he shuffles when he walks now and has mac degen too. On top of that... their only seeming vice is cocktail hours everyday, yes hours.
So we have... oxygen 24/7, not always stable due to drinking, poor vision, and now a puppy thrown in the mix. Sounds like a perfect storm to me. They have all kinds of money but that is not gonna make a broken hip or worse go away. There is no changing their minds either. Don't know what to do. There is no way that puppy is gonna get any exercise. They used to let their old dog out on the deck to take a dump and pee. They would not let him out in the snow, and he was hard to manage.
I am all kinds of worried about this situation. I can only hope they change their minds and back away from getting the dog.

On the happier side, had a good hatch, only one sussex made it out of the shell however. Got the cutest little Orloff chick, a poster child chick! Round and fluffy, a big chick with big bright eyes, but he had a neck problem where he would flail it around wildly and end up on his back and could not walk. Like a nervous disorder. I knew these issues could be due to vitamin deficiency and so I spent a lot of time dipping it's beak in vitamin water. Don't know if that helped or just not giving up, the chick now seems normal! Still lifts it's a bit higher than it should but it is better every day now. I expect it to be completely normal by tomorrow. It is eating and drinking and last I looked, was in the midst of the others, just opened it's eyes and looked at me then back for a nap, no exaggerated movements. This could be the chick from the egg layed by my old Orloff pair. It is the first fertile egg she has laid since last May or June. Anyone know if there is any connection with older pairs and chick disorders?

Good morning to all of us hardy Iowans! Well at least it is up to a balmy 1 degree here in northern IA. That is up 23 degrees from yesterday morn. I am so amazed at my chickens, I have 30 hens in a large pen in my 80 year old barn. Collected 18 eggs from them girls, steadily 16 -18 eggs every day even with all this cold weather. I am quite please with them.
I am very sick of winter so after hanging out reading this post all the time, I am so looking forward to firing up the bator! I can't wait till the swaps start. I really want to find someone with Deleware eggs to hatch. I got some last year, only managed to hatch 4 of 6 eggs, they were all roosters. I kept the prettiest one, the others went to freezer town. So, I thought maybe I could find someone here that will be going to Waverly or another swap tha has Deleware eggs or chicks they might want to sell or trade for something I have. Oh please I want it to be spring, NOW!

Your in-laws should meet my MIL. She has two dogs, two cats and only one of the dogs is housebroken. The other one is so hyper and she doesn't have the strength to get him under control. He is around 1 years old. I was just over there to feed them and taught him to sit for a treat in seconds. He was still wiggly, but he was sitting.

The thing is - those are her babies. She is lonely without them.

It's hard getting old sometimes...

You got that right Steph... I hate to loose a chicken let alone a dog. My mother had her dog and cat put down last year at different times, they were both old and ill. She, imo, made the right choice not to get any more pets and I am glad. She will be 84 in a couple weeks and is in better health than the inlaws who are almost ten years younger.

Chickeemama, there are 2 swaps coming up in MN in Feb. You may be able to ask here on BYC if anyone up there has Dellies and will be going. I know there is a Delaware thread on here too.

And Steph... just a reminder... after today we are at day 23 on the Keys countdown.
