Reynold Loecker, from SD judges almost strictly 4-H shows. He does Avoca, with his own birds and some of the Minnesota fall shows as well. You may find him listed on the APA website.

Im just half an hour away from Cherokee over in remsen. I've been through Milford a few times. A friend of mine has a condo at the lakes. Hopefully it works out so I can come to the show and meet some of you. With my job helping a farmer I wont know if ill be able to for sure until a week before the show

Adding a few pics of our non-chicken related sojourn out West! It's been a fun trip so far. My sincere thanks to our chicken sitter! The boys are finally wearing down. The majesty is incredible.

Hey Jim, your birds may be a bit young, but I can come over to see if you have some prospects. If you aren't showing, you should still attend. I can introduce you to some of these chicken folks, so you can put faces to BYC names.

i have a few questions about building pens for conditioning birds to show. im planning on building the pens so they are 24 inches wide by 30 inchs deep and 30 inches tall and build them in sets of 4. i will have the sides all solid. the back ill have so it can open and shut so i can seal the back up during the winter. the front will be wire. my questions are my coop isnt really big so i dont really want to take up more room in there so i was going to put these outside and keep the open end facing south and would be on the north side of my coop so that the coop blocks most the wind. i would also make something either out of plexiglass or that clear plastic to cover the open side during the windy parts of winter. i figured you guys living in iowa would understand what our winters were like. will this be enough shelter for the birds to live in safetly?

I wouldn't keep them in there all winter, but that's just me. I just cage them separately to fit them for show, then let them just be chickens during the off season. They snuggle up in the winter together to help keep them warm. Is your cage floor going to be solid or wire?

Im using solid floors with 4 to 5 inch's of wood shavings. It wouldn't be all winter either. Til november most likely the eastern Iowa show than go in the coop til early to mid feburary to get them ready for spring shows. February is one of the coldest months though

I am about 30-40 min south of IC too. Washington.

I am 10-15 minutes south of IC myself. I am a little over 5 miles east of the Kalona Cheese factory. Glad to have you with us. You are correct about DH.
