IA here

So far I'm planning to be. I have a bunch of layers to thin down so If I don't get them sold before then I'll bring them. I guess I also need a male call duck. I have 1 lonely call hen that isn't faring well with the bigger ducks. They pick on her terribly. Maybe because she's the only brown duck? She's the only duck the turkeys leave alone. She's totally in love with my white rooster, but of course he doesn't think much of her.

Without going to an auction (they're too far away), is there any hatchery that will sell just 4 or 5 silkies? Every place I've tried so far either makes you order 25 or you pay out the butt for just a few.

I'm getting really frustrated. I don't want 25, nor can I afford that many or would know what to do w/that many. But I REALLY want some silkies!! Thanks.

What part of IA are you in? I have 5 white silkies that are about 2.5-3.5 months old right now. They are out of exhibition birds, but aren't making the cut for the growout pen for various reasons. If I don't sell them at the New Ulm swap on the 31st, I'll bring them along to Waverly. $10 each and sex not guaranteed at this point yet. I have more batches hatching too and any PQ culls will be dirt cheap before I start putting too much feed into them. I live in southwestern MN...

Hey Eric.... I am just getting my first faverolle chicks out of the shell too now. I think you need a few of those too if you meander up for the next New Ulm swap.

I was wondering, can you have a silkie roo and a LF roo in the same coop? The roo I have right now is a wyandotte, and he's very docile, but I don't know alot about the silkie roos. I would love to have a roo for the silkies so that they can be fertile and all, but if I have a LF roo with the silkie hens, will he try to mount them?

Sometimes if they are raised together, they cohabitate fine. The silkies usually get the short end of the stick though and end up dead. A standard wyndotte may even kill your silkie hens if he gets a little too rough with mating. I personally have never even had luck brooding silkies with other breeds, much less housing them together as adults. I have heard of a few people over the years where it has been done though.
