When "Gumpsgirl" started having problems with her chickens we discussed getting IB vaccine in the event that was the problem. As it turned out it was not in her case but she was good enough to order it for me.
Specifically, it was the Newcastle-Bronchitis Vaccine B1 Type, B1 Strain, Massachusetts and Connecticut Types.
I had heard on the boards here that it was to be given to hens that were not laying yet. There was no mention of this in the literature enclosed with the vaccine so I called the company that was selling it, to ask. They could not find an answer to my question and referred me to Fort Dodge Pharmacuticals who I called on Wednsday.
Dr Myers of Fort Dodge returned my call a little while ago and answered my questions and thought I would let everyone here know what she said.
My first question was in regard to the hens being vaccinated BEFORE they started laying. She stated that any bird can be vaccinated at any age. The caveate being that there is a "slight" chance that egg production might drop off for "a bit".
My other concern was if the eggs could be eaten during the 2 week incubation period of the vaccine. She informed me that there is no restriction on egg consumption but that the egg whites might have a little bit of watery consistancy but were still okay to eat.
So I will immunizing my entire flock today or tomorrow. Additionally, it states on the literature to vaccinate all the birds at the same time and keep them away from unvaccinated birds for 10-14 days, using care to not go near unvaccinated birds with contaminated shoes, clothing etc.
