IBW 4 jeaucamom..UPDATE.... A CHICK..pics added!!!

UPDATE:

I have checked all of their toes again, and they seem to have corrected themselves. So that is good!

The chick that hadn't known how to walk is now walking and getting around fine. Also good!

The chick that had almost bled out is doing very well. I am not even sure which one she is anymore. LOL

PROBLEMS:

We have one chick (Peekaboo) that is being very aggressive. He was the first to hatch, and was in the brooder for many hours before I added the other chicks. When we put Miracle in there, he literally began trying to eat her. It was completely disturbing. Obviously we separated them. After the other 4 chicks hatched I put them in with Miracle, which worked great. She went right over and layed down with them and they were just chummy right from the get-go. I figured that Peekaboo was being strange because Miracle was still damp from hatching and looked more like an alien than a chick when I put her in there. So I waited for the rest of the chicks to dry, and then tried adding Peekaboo back. It seemed OK at first, but then he started pecking at them, aiming mostly for the eyes. He hasn't drawn blood, so I have not permanantly separated him. Whenever he takes a stab at one of the chicks I tap him on the head and separate him for about 5 minutes before adding him back in. I have not left them since I put them in there, so there is no fear of a picking problem that will mot be quickly resolved by myself, but I would much rather them just get along darn it! LOL. Is there anything else I can do to keep the peace?

Also, the 4 most recent chicks are completely dry, but not completely fluffed. I think that there is a thin layer of membrane on them still, but am not sure how to remove it. Will they remove it themselves, or should I wet them and try to get it off myself?

LOL. I am just not sure of anything right now. Mom went to bed around 11:30 last night and I have been up with the chicks since then. So I am pretty much on my own in terms of decision making until probably around 6 or 6:30 this morning.

Does anyone have any ideas??

Yep, after 23 1/2 hours I passed out. I couldn't stay awake any longer if I tried. Fortunately Jess got to nap from last evening till midnight. What a long, long, long process. The 5 others besides Peekaboo just or not your "super healthy, thriving" little chicks. Peekaboo is big and robust and hopping everywhere and chirping LOUDLY. The others are still wobbly, unsteady, leaning to one side and moving very little. We have tried a little poly'visol. Well, I'm very glad they are alive!! We'll add pics in a little bit.

EDited: Oops, obviously not awake yet....This is Suz, not Jess

whew! glad that is all over for you. I had my first hatchling act very aggressive, too. I worried it may be a cockrel? But now all is fine. I hear someone being attacked at different times of the day but it only lasts about 2-3 seconds. By the time I even look at the brooder it is over and I see nothing wrong inside. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for pullets for you!!

Mine did a little pecking at each other too. I think it's checking each other out. Peekaboo is just older and stronger than the others, he's had a chance to rest up from his hatching ordeal. The other's had a rough time of it, it's going to take a little bit of time for them. Then they will all be running around like little crazies.

Suggestion, if you don't have staggered hatches in the other bators, I'd suggest that you let them hatch in that bator, and see if there is any difference. Maybe something is haywire in your hatcher, humidity or something. I don't know, I'm just grasping at straws here.

I sure glad you got some babies.

Oh yeah, this bator goes in the trash, or back to the feed store, haven't decided which. I will never use it again. It was an LG 9200 and the temp never held steady and the humidity was impossible to manage. My two 1588 are the most stable things in the entire world. I will order another one today.

Man, I LOVE my 1588! Absolutely love it. I didn't have to mess with it one little tiny bit. I did put bubble wrap over it at night to stablize the temps since our house goes down to 62 a night.

I did have a little trouble with the humidity but I filled all the extra little troughs and all was well. I like the new little hygrometer I got to. Worked like a champ. Didn't have any mushy babies, all clean hatches. I did open it too much so some dried out, but for the most part it was stress free. Best Christmas present ever. (Well, maybe not ever...

The chicks neurology issues seem to be resolving very quickly! Peekaboo is in with them and doing fine with them. I ordered another 1588 and two of those two good hygrometers! Thanks Denise for the link... I talked to the guy in person and he stuck em in a box and they are already on their way and so is the 1588.

I WILL NEVER HATCH AGAIN WITH A LG 9200!!! I feel better now

All my other babies will have the best chance I can give them!!
