Icelandic Chickens

Sorry to be gone so much. The move to a new platform is a huge undertaking, not on the scale of BYC but for two of us, it is huge.

I think the drop off in traffic is directly related to the glitch in the subscription service. It is hard to remember all the threads you follow to go check in and read posts. Sometimes by the time you remember to check it is several pages ahead of where you left off.

Do not despair Drumstick Diva, on Monday we are getting pigs! Stay tuned.

no Mary, get the little teacup minnie pigs.Imagine how many you could have per acre? They sell for really big bucks according to the bus driver. She wants to save up and get one, gee I would think she'd want to save up for a home first.

I have a fellow from South Phoenix that's been looking for a good free range breed.

He'll be coming to get some Icelandics from me before the end of the year.

So, maybe use the garage as a coop and get a small car to fit in the shed? Hmmmmmmmmm.......

Is the garage a five car? Then yes...........

Small for gas efficiency, large truck for hauling fencing, feed, etc.

Think security Pete. Not from the outside in but from the inside out. I am pretty sure all icelandic chickens hatch looking for a way to get back to Iceland. DH chased one through the donkey pasture, under a fence and back into our yard today. She was headed down the neighbor's driveway via the irrigation canal. In 15 months of free ranging this is the first time any have started to go over and under fences. Make it secure. Combination locks.

They do have those roaming Viking tendenciees...I don't have any that have tried to "vacant" our place........yet. Mine love to roost up high...the
10 feet high barn rafters....that they reach by hopping on the "middle" roost that is 3-4 feet high or the broody coop top which is 6 feet high. They will go broody, so you will need to plan for places for them, if you want to let them hatch their own. They love to be outside scratching for "stuff" and dust bathing, so if you can't free range them, make their area as large as possible. I don't have any other roosters here and my hens/pullet of other breeds lay a brown egg, so no chance of me hatching a mixed breed. If you're going to have multiple breeds, more security, especially during the time of the year you will be hatching, will be necessary.
I'm glad to hear you're getting Icelandics!!

I thought that I'd stop in to say hi to everyone. I've been here and there on BYC, but various goings-on in the offline world have me only logging in a few minutes at a time.

I'm now in the planning stages for a new coop and run, intending to populate it with Icelandics come early summer if possible. Any suggestions I should keep in mind while planning? A new garage under construction means I now have a large shed to work with, and my wonderful wife has begun to recover her normal eye movement....for some reason she would roll her eyes and shake her head whenever I brought up the topic of more chickens. It was the darndest thing

I'm glad that she's feeling better now.
I hope that all of you are doing well, too.
