Icelandic Chickens

Well, Isi Isison is going to Southern MI, to be with Robins flock ! He will do well there in a more southernly clime. I will take him to Chickenstock in June.

By then I hope that I am incubating one full hatcher of eggs by the dark featherlegged guy, and have another batch to incubate when they go into lock down.

Bjorns will be in later July, a dozen or so to have some of his roosters standing by plus a few pullets I hope take his size on.

So, will be building a couple more pens this spring, or maybe put up some good chain link ones, covered of course. LOTS of coons here, had a couple pawing through the compost pile in the garden already. A HavaHart or two are in the near future. Has to be.

Yup, got it on the calendar, was going to sign up, will need directions, have been to Lansing for the other kinds of shows, I wanted to go last year but something came up and couldnt make it.

Besides Isi Isison, I am also bringing Robin the nice large white feather-legged Rooster too, he also has a SC, on size he is my first choice and has gorgeous feathered legs. He also has a slightly 'tighter' feathering to his body feathers, cant really explain it but the dark rooster has 'looser fluffier' feathers. And a RC. I dont intend to keep any SC roosters after this winter and will be looking very closely at any pullets with them, I want the smallest possible combs and wattles.

My hens have been laying very well this winter with just some additional light, and the eggs are pushing the larger side of medium now, no smalls anymore.

I will probably be here at my sons a couple more months at least so I will be investing in several 6' high chain link pens for them. One to keep extra roosters in, one for the brood hens and one for the layers. When I do move these will be much easier on the chickens.

A question in general to all on combs, so far I have only had RCs and SCs and a couple hens with the smaller intermediate comb that is part RC, have any of you had any Pea Combs?

I havent seen or heard of any, so far, I would prefer them overe the RC, but, as I say, I want the smallest combs and wattles that I can find.

All other traits are also under the gun, but my first selection is SC roosters out, and very close comparisons of pullets with SC and close look at all other characteristics. So far my little flock scores excellent to me in winter laying, egg size for age, and hardiness, especially considering the brutal on them move through 3 states with minus 25F getting here. To me they have more then proven themselves on winterhardiness just surviving that.

So, the goal is this year, to keep what I have in this flock, increase the percentage of RCs, and when I can go for the smallest ones and wattles, add the enhanced feathering especially the feathered legs, and as many crests as can be, the crests seem to me to be similar to having a cap on in the winter.

Its going to be a very interesting year, I think fascinating, looking forward to meeting more of you at Chickenstock !

Check out my new ride!

The news on my tests was good and bad. Bad in that the damage is severe, good in that there is something that can be done. My spinal cord is severely compressed in several areas causing the pain, numbness and weakness in my legs. I am going to have steroid injections tomorrow and if that doesn't work I will need a procedure to decompress the spinal cord. The doctor also scheduled me for a cervical spine MRI next week. I see the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow about my knee after the x-ray showed damage after the pig incident. My ability to do my daily chores with the animals is limited so I found this electric scooter on Craigslist. It is a 2008 model but still has the plastic on the seat and seat back. The woman who I bought it from got it from her grandfather who bought it then never used it. I am excited to have it. I just rode it down to the pasture and dumped a big pail of fireplace ashes in the dust bath holes, collected eggs, and took carrots to the donkeys. It was a blast despite the fact that it started hailing halfway through.

Thank you so much Jake. I think I will make 2 pens and put a rooster in each pen and work from there.

I certainly have enough Icelandic's to do this.

Mary can you rope those emus off that lemon electrical horse??

Yeehaw !!! Here comes the Sheriff !

Does the little emu try to ride along beside you ? That little sucker is really growing !

Robin both of these guys should be well worth setting up breeding groups with. Your Isi will have more gold on his back then Kathys but both are really magnificent guys, worthy sons of their sire ! Your white Rooster will be great to pair with your darker hens, it will be interesting to see what he produces. He's going to be big like Isi.

Jake, I am at a disadvantage even with the Cricket scooter. It goes 8-10 MPH and hour tops, and the emus clock in at 40-45 MPH. The emus walked alongside me! Yes, the baby girls are growing up fast. They are sweet as sugar and love to lay at our feet and have their backs stroked. The boys would never have allowed that. I just love them all. Even when I was in a full blown emu attack with the big ones in my face and the little ones going after the bottom half I was cracking up. They just make my day!
