Icelandic Chickens

I'm going to be restoring an old farmer style henhouse that's on the property for my birds, it is large enough that I will be able to divide it and segregate at LEAST to different flocks, so I will be able to have my layer/meat flock, my Nankin breeding flock, and a section for Icelandics where there won't be any crossbreeding.

I just have to post and respond to the crossbreeding of Icelandics. Please don't do it. Icelandics are critically endangered and major efforts are being made to save them and maintain their purity. They should NEVER be crossed. I know some people free range them with other breeds but they don't hatch the eggs. I guess at this point the damage is already done in the U.S. Thank goodness the Icelandic people treasure their birds and they have done a great job of saving them from extinction and keeping them pure.

At this point all I can do is ask that people reconsider crossbreeding them and stop it! If you still do it, please don't post about it! Sigrid asked us to "not mess with them" but I guess it is too late for that. I think it may be time to stop sharing these birds and close the ranks to the preservationists only.

Sorry if this offends anyone but I have a duty to Sigrid to try to stop this activity. I have been passionate about the Icelandics since Stella jumped over my fence and I am heartsick today.

I thought the same when I saw it, but as I haven't got any of the beauties yet I didn't think it was my place to say anything.

I second this sentiment! Once mixed, the genetics are gone....there is no going back. This is the Icelandic thread, only purebreed Icelandics are Icelandics. What makes them Icelandic is the genetics, not how they look, and you can never refer to any crossbreed as Icelandic, because they are not.
If you are offended by The Sheriff's or my post, then it's because you have not read what it took for The Sheriff to get this line of Icelandics. The commitment she made, and the one many of us have made to keep the genetic treasure that these birds have pure, is one we take seriously.

I just want add since I'm new to this thread that I agree with the sentiments above. I have read most of this thread and initially when I started I just wanted a few for eye candy with no intention of raising them. The 7 older birds are running with my free range flock and I'm starting to get pullet eggs, but I know they're not pure and won't hatch any. Won't even let any go as a "barnyard mix". I love playing with cross breeding, some of my favorite birds are hybrids, but I respect the effort here and the Icelandics are not part of that and never will be. They are unique for who they are and don't need to be tampered with.

This is my little Cowboy, I caught him riding one of my horses one time and the name seemed to stick

For a long time he would hunt me down so I could help him roost at night.

Agree! My Icelandic roo is running with my egg flock right now so he won't be lonely, none of those eggs will ever be incubated! As soon as my Icelandic chicks are older, he will be put with them only. I admire the work you have all done to preserve this gem and I am honored to be a part of it! Of course hubby might disagree with my stealing and renovating his tool shed so that I can keep them separate!!! lol
