Yay! My rear roll-out nest box worked! Here is my first egg from the Icelandics first day in the new coop.

Also some of the babies got on their roost tonight. I was sure they would all be up on the high roosts as that is where the little ones were this afternoon when I went to check on them. This is funny. Notice the guy on the left? He is not one of their hatch. He is from the prior hatch. His friends are up on the big roost. These guys don't appreciate him being on theirs one bit!

I spent the afternoon cleaning out the henhouse. It was mighty disgusting after having way too many birds in it for way too long. I pulled the roosts down and the nest boxes out. I simplified things and just put two roosts back, a jump up roost and a higher one. That should be sufficient for 9 layers and any of the bantam cochins I keep. I still have one rafter sleeper so tomorrow I am going to close off the rafters with chicken wire. I can't use plywood because we have skylights and roof venting. I am cleaning the nest boxes and putting them back in as well as making cabinet door for my shelving. I have one who likes to sleep in there. Hopefully cleaning will be easier now. I think I need to just bite the bullet and do it more often. Pics to come.

oohhhhh I love that the rolling nest box works. That is so nice! What are the nest pad things? They look interesting do tell more.

Everything looks great in their new coop!

And the nest pads look wonderful for taking out and hosing them off to clean them....instead of me out with my kiddie sandbox shovel scooping out poopy shavings from each nest box because my hens like to lay an egg, use the restroom and then leave.

I will go check them out for sure, thanks for the link.

OK, the bulk feeder works great except that the babies stand on the tray and bill pounds of feed onto the floor. I hopefully put a stop to that by stapling some 1/2 vinyl coated hardware cloth over the tray. We'll see who's smarter.

Isi was the first out the pop door of course. The babies were reluctant at first but Michael went inside the coop and shooed them out. They look like they are jumping off the Grand Canyon!

Michael wanted me to take this picture to prove he was up before nine o'clock! He's in the window.

Don't they look pretty?

We put up temporary fencing to keep them confined near the barn until they learn where home is. It is not electrified.

View from the house. Needless to say it is very foggy here today but it is burning off.
