I'm just a little enamored of them. I have 80ish hens and 5 roosters, and 2 that I'm not sure of the sex yet.

Yeah, I've sold many locally, and I sell day olds. I just bought a cabinet incubator off of a local farming mail list and I pick it up next Tuesday. Soon I'll have more Icelandic chickens than Iceland.

I have a batch of eggs from David Grote in the little Brinsea incubator that I have had for a few years now.

I think my next batch of babies goes to Alaska.

The genetic drift in my flock is definitely headed toward the peachy side:



And I have about 20 with crests:



I have three with black crests, which I've heard is very rare in Iceland.



I'm also starting to see some black beaks, only this year.

The roo in the first series of pics on your site is a magnificent looking bird, you have many of his chicks about? I do like him and the peachy hen you showed. Awesome !

Genetic drift will happen in a flock, inevitable in limited numbers but what keeps it minimized is so many of us prefer one color pattern over others, so the variety there is gives something for everyone. I think it is good to get stock/eggs from another source regularly just to keep the diversity.

Where did Lyle get his initial stock from? Has he added to it since then?

Re Cayenne Pepper,

I used to feed it and crushed red pepper seeds to both parrots and Red Factor Canarys to enhance the red color, really worked well.

Nice to see it has other uses for chickens too.

Someone here needs to put a booklet out on 'old cures and remedies for farmstead critters'.

There you are, you got a title to wrap a booklet around !

Hey kathy thanks for the Icelandic chickens i already giving away eight chickens to two other people,I 'm going to keep some and spread the others around in arkansas.
