Maybe I should just turn this problem over to Jack!

Kathy ships chicks and she is closer to you!

That might be a better option, less egg wastage. thanks.

I have a chicken that does that.
It kept getting out of my new fenced in pen. I clipped one wing and the next day i find her outside the pen really depressed looking... I realized that she could then still get out but after disappearing to lay an egg she became too dehydrated to get back in before i noticed her.... after 2 weeks of her recovering i *think* she learned her lesson...

I saw how she did it after i clipped her wing. she could still propel herself and she would climb straight up the fence and use the beak to help her leverage her to the next wire...

At that point i realized it is hopeless to try to contain her. And i am not clipping her wings ever again...

Stella is not the only escape artist chicken.

Wenatchee?!? Cool! I have an aunt in Cashmere. That's beautiful country there. Should be perfect for Viking Chickens!

I am beginning to feel bad about saving the squished egg and giving the chick to Lukka! I just went down to check on them and the baby came out from under momma to check out some chickens that were looking at them through their chicken wire door. Lukka was so mad at the baby and she kept trying to push it back under her but it was curious and didn't want to go back. Eventually she got it back under her but not until it got a little discipline. I think I can stop obsessing over her rejecting the chick and not make so many trips down there during the day. In a couple of days when the weather improves, I think I'll try opening their door so Lukka can take the baby out. Then I'll start obsessing again!

Tomorrow is hatch day for 1 Coronation Sussex and 24 Mille Fleur Leghorns! Wednesday is lockdown for the Easter eve hatch of 3 New Hampshires and 5 Barred Rocks from Kathy! Then the following Tuesday one more Coronation Sussex is supposed to hatch. Then I am done for awhile. Every day one of the Icelandic girls tries being broody but taking the eggs from them has gotten them up and off the nests. Let's hope it keeps working. Last August when we moved to this property we had four broodies with new hatchlings all at once! The horror.

Mary, You're breaking broodies and I'm trying to get mine to sit!! I just put 10 Icelandic eggs, that have been in the bator for a week, under Anna. She's been sitting consistently on 6 golf balls for five days, so let's hope this works!

I also picked up the chicks that BYCer apc had in her bator that hatched yesterday. Six little Icelandic fuzzy butts and two Auburn Javas. Next to hatch will be the 9 Icelandic and 18 other eggs that I set for the Easter Hatch. My first time incubating eggs.......so nervous.....that's why I like my hens to hatch and raise them.......I have enough gray hair!
