Icelandic Chickens

Will there ever come a time when we will separate types of Icelandics?

You know like other breeds,

Whites
Blacks
Wheatens
Golden Duckwings

Vindurs!

Not me! Plus, who's to say at some point they will lay eggs that hatch chicks the same color as them? Does this make sense? I am tired. I was up early writing Mahonri a song.

Blamann is teaching the newbies the ropes here. He called the girls to where Cody spilled a bucket of feed.
Snow was receptive, ........ ummm, mostly.

He stood guard over Snow, as she checked out the new digs.

Romeo was not impressed, especially when he wanted to court Kola.

Blamann chased him down ....

until he hid by the tree, behind the block.....

Romeo noticed when Snow found herself on the wrong side of the fence..... (and you shoulda heard Blamann!)

Such beautiful birds Kathy... and I have their descendants in my brooder!

The HUGE white Icelandic, the 3 BRs... (Probably two roos and pullet) The NH and the SLW (Please let them be hens !)
the other equally gorgeous Icelandics
And ToM's 3 and The Wardens HUGE VARIETY.... I can't believe you can get so many colors!

Also can't wait to see how the NuWest neighbors new Icelandics feather out.

I imagine there are those in Iceland that consciously cull certain types from their flocks based on personal preference. I'm sure there will be here as well. What I don't want to see is a "standard" to which they HAVE to be bred. I don't think that naming their coloring (duckwing, wheaton, mottled, etc) is a problem and it would be nice to call them the proper thing, but I don't ever want to see them "required" to be anything except what they are..........unique..diverse..a rare gem of a gift that could so easily be lost. Minnesota I have seen other pics of Icelandics with beards and muffs, and about every comb that there is.

I would hate to see a 'standard' of what they are supposed to be, that would counter a thousand years of selection in Iceland.

Having names for the colors I actually think would be an aid. Also types of crests, color patterns etc.

Myself I intend to keep diversity, I dont know how the single combs will do here in northern MI, but I will give them a chance. My preference is pea and rose and cushion, but we will see. I WILL have a roo similar to Isi, and a hen similar to Lukka but the rest will be different, and will have a darker roo for sure. Maybe several .

I am sure that there will be selection , just as there was in Iceland, egg laying, growth etc, its bound to happen , some for crests, some for certain comb types, its bound to be, thats the beauty of this breed, there is something special for everyone !!

Kathy thanks for the beautiful green photos, you have a great place there.

Spring is creeping in here, this week its supposed to rain every day but today, so I am expecting rain today too, night temps above freezing, should bring the lilac leaf buds out, and others.

Happy Easter all, enjoy !
