Icelandic Chickens

Jake the first round of Icelandics hatched March 15. And I agree, the USPS is to blame for many unhatchable eggs here.

Today I will be taking individual pics of my extra roos. I am shipping some chicks to Dillingham and his buddy wants some hens and a roo. We use local carriers for instate transport, many rural communities are only accessible by air. How much do any of you charge for adult birds? I'm not sure if he wants Icelandics or just the layers, I'm waiting for his response on that, but either way, I have a few extra I can send him.

My main contact in Dillingham wants Icelandic chicks and that is why I have eggs in my bator now.

Mary, of the 39 eggs, it looks like 12 are progressing ... thanks Mr. Postman

But, 12 is better than none.

This brings up a good point, I donot intend to sell any Icelandics, but, I am going to ask for a donation, per bird to the Icelandic fund.

So, any suggested amounts? I probably wont be shipping eggs, but I can deliver started birds a few miles or meet folks halfway, I have inquiries in the NW area for ~ a dozen next year. I would say started from one mos to three months old.

$5-8 per bird for the fund?? For one month olds?

I am not going to have a huge number as I dont want more then 12-15 hens, and whatever pullets I start, and keeping 4-5 roos. But there will be some numbers to place out. These two groups are going to other pack goat folks, one has several Icelandic horses and Icelandic dogs so I expect her flock will have a very good home, the other guy is a great photographer so I am hoping he turns his lens on them.

Would like to hear thoughts and opinions.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens and Pack Goats.

I just gave two Icelandic hens to a neighbor this morning who raises Icelandic horses. They will be her only chickens. I gave her a white one and a dark one and she named them Luna and Negra. I was offered an Icelandic horse, 18 years old, fully trained for free. He is owned by someone who can no longer care for all the horses they have. I would have loved to have accepted it but I just can't take on anymore large animals. If I were in better health, I would have jumped at the chance but it wouldn't be fair to me or the horse. I am glad I didn't get to see him. That would have been a done deal! Lucky for me he is two hours away from here.

I did sell some juveniles way back in the beginning but I don't remember for how much. I have sold some day olds for $5.00 locally. Technically I have sold some to Jake because he has reimbursed me over and above the cost of shipping. Thanks Jake!

But I have never actually sold an adult bird. I have sent donations to Johanna in Iceland and will do so again soon.

I think given the poor viability of the shipped eggs (sorry again Michelle) I am probably going to make this egg shipment to Shawn my last. (unless you're my friend and you twist my arm behind my back) It is just too expensive to keep reshipping eggs to people. (not you guys. I could do that day) I may just take orders and ship day-olds.

I am still willing to pay you for the 2 batches of eggs you sent me. Someone never sent me her paypal acct #...

I just received a request for the eggs in my incubator due to hatch September 4th!

I didn't want t sit at the Poultry Exchange with them anyway. A couple with Icelandic horses, dogs, and sheep and driving several hours to pick them up the day after they hatch. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the 27 baby chicks I have now, plus the 8 eggs due to hatch over the next few days and the 7 under my broody. That's only 42!
