Icelandic Chickens

Seinna means "later" in Icelandic - so more a closing than a name. I asked her the same question before and I thought the same about the brown-toned color, but I believe that is actually spelled sienna.

Laurie is right. I asked Sigrid once how I would sign my posts "Later, The Other Mary" in Icelandic and she told me Seinna would be the correct term. I haven't used it in a while but thought I'd return to using it.

@kathleens1979 Have a nice visit!! We will expect a full report..........with pictures!!!

Thought I might post a few of my 7-8 week olds:

They look a lot like road runners right now...

Sorry to take over this thread, but I thought I would post a neat collage I found on Flikr of Icelandic combs. Anyone seen all of these in your flocks??? They are pretty unusual.

Kathleens I love the tall crest on the black one. He almost looks like he needs his "lawn," mowed.

the one on the left in the picture with her looks a cockerel with the wattles but the crest says pullet.
The gold one look like she is Hetta's spittin' image!

Are crests unusual on young cockerels? I did not plan it, but 7 of the 10 I hatched were crested. NO way I would be lucky enough to hatch that many pullets!!! In fact, Hetta Jr. (Mary, I totally agree it is her spitting image!) looks like a "he," not a "she." Diva, the super tall crest is from the wind! Lol! It's a pretty standard height in regular weather.

Well, folks, I wanted a broody so badly, and now I have two. I put 9 EE babies that we hatched at the high school under my australorp since the huge clutch of Icelandic eggs were too old and not doing anything. She took to them great! Then last night, Harpa, our blackish mottled Icelandic was sleeping in the nest box again. She was still there this morning and was fussy when I felt under her instead of running screaming from the nest as usual. She is only sitting on one egg, and since I am getting eggs tonight, I think I will put some under her. How many should I place? We are getting 24, but I know that's waaaaay too many...
