Icelandic Chickens

Well, folks, I wanted a broody so badly, and now I have two. I put 9 EE babies that we hatched at the high school under my australorp since the huge clutch of Icelandic eggs were too old and not doing anything. She took to them great! Then last night, Harpa, our blackish mottled Icelandic was sleeping in the nest box again. She was still there this morning and was fussy when I felt under her instead of running screaming from the nest as usual. She is only sitting on one egg, and since I am getting eggs tonight, I think I will put some under her. How many should I place? We are getting 24, but I know that's waaaaay too many...
Yay, Harpa! Her sister, Hola, is sitting now, too!!.......along with Anna, Asta and Gula.
I've put as many as 12 under my Icelandics and had them hatch 10 and 11. Eight is a safer number for a first time momma.

It's exciting though - hope for good hatches

Great pictures, such pretty birds. Love those black hens with the backwards Colombian coloring (sorry, I don't know the real name for that color :)) Sounds like an educational trip :)

Kathleen, you are so lucky! You got to meet a chicken celeb! Hehe :)

I have my first Icelandic broody!!! I have a broody Wyandotte, too, so now both are on Icelandic eggs. I hope my girls can hatch more babies for me, because I ended up with all boys from the last hatch. Gah!

I am so glad you were able to talk to Lyle and visit his farm. He has done so much so help get Icelandic chickens spread around to those that want them. I hope the eggs all hatch!!

Thanks everyone!!! The trip was pretty exciting!!

Red, this is the year of the cockerel, I swear. I have had tons of roosters hatch in all my hatches this year! Mr. Behl said the same thing (see me name dropping there? Lol). It really is crazy, though. Hope all our hatches yield more pullets this time around. I think we are due some extras!!!
