LOL that one in particular always stretches out - cracks me up. I don't know if it is normal or not, but I have a couple in this batch that stretch out and sleep. Almost like they are sunbathing!

Thanks. I am pretty bummed out. Ordering a batch of Bielefelders today from Greenfire Farms did make me feel a little better ;) . I guess that's the upside I'm going to look at. I was getting second gen Bielefelders from the person that shipped the DOA chicks, now I'm getting them from the source. I had to argue with her but she did give me back the price of the chicks minus the shipping cost. She mentioned another batch in the incubator but never offered to replace mine. I can't believe I had to argue for the refund of the cost of the chicks. I have my own business and I know I would have given a full refund (including shipping) right off the bat - I'm taking the product risk being the seller in my eyes. Most days you come out ahead as the business owner, but some days you lose money by doing the right thing... BUT it gets you further ahead in the long run. That's how I see it at least. At least I know I'm safe ordering from Greenfire if things go awry. Lesson learned. PS. Your avatar picture of the dog staring so intently at the camera always makes me giggle! My dog does the same thing ;)
I think the seller should be able to make a claim with the PO and get her money back. That's what I have done in the past with egg sales that got damaged in shipping. Have you ever had to do this? The buyer sent me pics of the eggs and the box and I submitted my claim. The USPS did pay... IDK why he/she would not refund all of your money. That really does not speak to good customer service... Just out of curiosity, I've seen your website- beautiful birds there!!- why the Bielefelders? Are they good egg layers or meaties? I don't know much about them other than they are barred and look a lot like my Euskal Oiloas (that I keep trying to get rid of... Lol). Btw- have the first pip of the new hatch!!! If I don't get any white Icees in this hatch, I may buy some eggs from you, Kaldakur... I love white birds and can't get any!!!

as far as I know USPS does NOT guarantee perishables, chicks, plants, etc. so it's a waste of time to try. On overnite express I think they will return shipping IF, the package is not delivered on time but, I am doubtful. My friend ordered birds 3 or 4 times and none of them arrived by noon the next day (which was allegedly guaranteed), twice they came in 2 full days, and one time the bird arrived 4 days late but fortunately survived.

Ditto what Drumstick Diva said. They won't cover live chicks unfortunately.

I'm looking at the Bielefelders for meat birds (they are supposed to be good dual purpose, but I'm interested in a sustainable meat bird - and I like the off the wall breeds). The Icelandics just aren't good enough meat birds for me - but I love them for so many other things - and can't imagine not having them now! They give me no shortage of eggs, that's for sure. I looked up the Euskal Oiloas (that's a mouthfull!!!) and they look a lot like the Bielefelders, just maybe a hair smaller. Neat birds for sure.

Man, I'm plagued by white birds! I have one solid white hen and she is pretty potent. I kept one white chick from the last hatch, he is a crested white roo that is a month old that has two black or blue feathers and I think I have 4 or 5 white chicks from this past hatch. I have several buff/Colombian color hens, but can't seem to get a buff chick - but I've got white!!! One in this hatch is white with black wing tips. Pretty neat coloring for white ;). I can definitely help in the white department. Maybe someday we can trade!

Yeah, that would be great! I have been saving eggs for a woman with Midget White turkeys to trade with her, and it's been a struggle with my broody to get very many since I only have three adult hens. I need more laying hens, but I also want more broodys to raise chicks... It's an ongoing struggle. Lol!!! I looked up the Bielefelders on Greenfire's website and they do seem pretty great! I'm in the market for a new meat bird alternative- we are raising Cornish X for the first time this year, and I don't really feel great about it because they are so not chicken-like and kind of gross- so please keep us posted on how they work out for you. I kind of want to try the American Bresse which is another Greenfire import, I think. They are supposed to be taste amazing. That may be a next summer project. I've never slaughtered a bird before, so who knows- after this batch of 20 I may say, "I'm done!" Time will tell if I can hack it.

Not sure how the turkeys are going to work out. I've heard chickens and turkeys don't mix sometimes because of blackhead disease potential, but my husband is convinced things will be okay and that this is one more step towards self sufficiency. Anyone have experience with keeping chickens and turkeys together? We also got ducks this spring and that has been fantastic so far. We chose Cayugas for their preservation status and for their egg laying- hoping perhaps some of my table egg customers will be interested in trying duck eggs. They are the funniest birds! They crack me up, and no real conflicts disease or temperament-wise with the chicken flock. I have to say that I

the ducks!

Our single pip is getting bigger, but no one else has pipped yet. I will get some pics up of the new arrivals in the next couple days!!!
