YAY ! ! ! I got my computer back from the hospital. I no longer have to struggle with that laptop.

I did not get to work much outside today, as I had errands all day. I did happen to catch Sunna lay her egg and I grabbed it! Tomorrow the egg bomb goes in. I read someone said to add, "apple bitter," from the equine section because alot of chickens like the mustard and other ingredients tried. I wanna get some of that.

I started to count today .... I believe I have at least 50 Icelandic chicks of different ages. I think 40 - 45 are males!

I have a sad update on Lukka's hatch. I made the gut wrenching decision just now to remove all the eggs and discard them. There had been an accident in the brooder box and the eggs were covered in mold. I won't go into any more detail but the likelihood of an exploding egg or 12 in the next few days was undeniable. I feel horrible, but I had to do it. I hope without eggs or a nest box, she will move on and cease being broody. Chances of that are slim, so I will let her be the rest of the day and if she still seems broody tomorrow I will make another nest box for her and give her three or four eggs. This time I will mark the eggs and remove any added eggs daily.

On a happier note, I moved (8) seven-week-old chicks from the big brooder in the barn to the heated grow out coop in the covered yard. They have a sweeter heater in there and red Christmas lights. They have a ramp to go up and down to an enclosed bottom. With the big brooder in the barn freed up, I was able to move (9) ten-day-old stink pots out of my office! Thank goodness. I am going to clean tomorrow like a mad woman. No more brooding in the house! I only did it this time because they were lethargic and delayed I think from the power outage. I am so tired and so disgustingly filthy that I stripped in the laundry room, wrapped in a towel from the dryer, went upstairs and showered until the top layer of skin came off. I still feel grody. I know, TMI, but who else am I gonna' share this stuff with?

Mary, LOL my polace is the same! I have broodies (stinkpots is a funny but accurate term!) in the kitchen, two ages of babies in separate boxes, cages of all sorts, free running chickens.....they are literally everywhere, and the truth is I LOVE IT!

So get clean and then sit back and enjoy the thought that you are surrounded by fun!

Mary,
My guess is you will never break Lukka from being broody! That is one determined broody girl! She wrote the book on broodiness.

Give Thurston a chance. He is still young and stupid, ya know.

Congrats on getting them outside. I'm about to go work some more on my NellaBean Brooder so I can get the 27 mutts I hatched for my housewarming party out into the garage. I want to set up my new craft room but not till they've been evicted peee-eeeew!!!

With any luck it will only be a few short weeks till the temps stay above freezing for good. I need to get a new thermometer for the coop that I can read from the house so I can start tracking the lows and make sure it's warm enough to throw those rowdy teens out into the coop with the big kids. The timing should be good, the teens will move outside about the time the Icelandic chicks are ready to leave the inside brooder for the garage brooder.
