Two are out and there are more to go. As soon as they are all hatched and taken from the broody male, I will go to the breeder's house and pick out the two I want. Please let me find a boy and a girl then I don't have to worry about what gender the baby in my office is! Hmmm, maybe I should force Kelly to go with me.

Not kidding, the female lays the eggs and the male incubates, hatches, and raises the babies! Enoch, the father of my baby emu has been sitting for two months. He has had several broods in the ten years they have had him. The female Boom Boom, will kill baby chicks so she has to be kept in a separate area. Pretty amazing huh?

Pretty birds Cheryl! I may send the pic of your funky feathered girl to Marty, with your permission of course and ask if that is the odd feathering she has noticed on a few birds. BTW, my baby with what looked like angel wings, looks perfectly normal now. I was trying to figure out which one he was in the brooder and I had a heard time. Also the little stiff, cold, nearly dead baby who couldn't hold his wings up is one of the biggest in the brooder now. Never in my wildest dreams did I figure that one would survive. I carried it around in my pocket thinking it was dead. Hardy little suckers.

I don't think there is anything odd about that chick's feathers. I think it just sort fluffed up before the picture. I have seen mine do it before. Not natural looking at the time of the picture, but then they look fine. Weird, I know..... I think it looks like the tail feathers have been picked on by some other birds, possibly, though.

Hi Kathy

I hope the roo pen gets a reprieve, again, thats why I was wondering how far down there that you are. Cant make it down even if it was closer, we got 2' of snow this week, but still wondering about your boys. Gotta be a great mind shaker amongst that many.

Mary I have see a program on Animal Planet a couple times now on a project a palentologist has in trying to reverse evolve/devolve from an emu to a dino bird, because of the similarities between emus and dinos. Maybe the mother of your chicks is even closer then they thought ?
