I actually thought that the cool weather had just slowed the girls down because I had been getting very few eggs lately. Well today I watched my white hen lay an egg, get up and walk away. Two seconds later my brown hen was bustin into that egg like it hadnt been fed in days.

So, she is now in solitary confinement and will be provided with mustard filled eggs for a few days in hopes that I can break her. Otherwise she becomes a free ranger.

I just discovered the same thing! My LB mottled hen is laying and I got two eggs for Kathyinmo, trying to save a dozen and start finding busted shells, so yesterday as I waited outside resting I watch her return and eat her own egg! Crazy!

Camelot, I had 3 hens in chicken jail because they had been eating eggs. I never caught them breaking into one, but it was possible they were eating them after having been broken from weak shells or being laid/dropped onto something hard. I finally felt sorry for them after 10 days or so. I should have sent them to freezer camp instead. The next day I found 5 partial egg shells. Found 2 with egg on their face so I locked them up until their fate is decided. If I could find something that would be SURE to break them, I'd fill an egg and let them at it. Mine however eat anything and everything! Pastrymama in the AZ forum got me hooked up with a caterer who is on a zero landfill program, recycles everything, so my hens get their 'wet waste', which is all the kitchen scraps and leftovers, and then they buy the eggs from me at $3 a dozen. It's a win win. Hence, my flock eats EVERYTHING!

Who else has a flock that gets their feed catered?!?! I'm really trying to keep the caterer happy since this is the first time since starting with chickens that it has been a positive cash flow situation.

Guess what I might be getting?............................an incubator!! Me, who said I didn't want one, that I'd use my broodies...........I've been caught up in the Icelandic vortex of "A FEW IS NOT ENOUGH!!" At our local Purina Poultry Workshop on Tuesday, a gentleman came up to me afterward and asked if I would be interested in a couple of incubators he had. I said possibably....what kind....he said 400 egg Sears Cabinets.

I came home and did some research and called him to ask some questions. He said he'd plug them in since he hadn't used them in 3 years. He called this morning and said he's had them on since Friday morning and they are holding temps, do I want to come take a look.........so apc (a BYCer who lives down the road a couple of miles from me) and I will be going today to look at them. apc was going to put my Easter Hatch eggs in her current bator but I may be putting my eggs in my own........but I may be a few hours behind everyone else...........who cares.......Icelandics are early hatchers anyway, right!!!!!!!!!!!

Roll out nest box!

I got my roll out nest pads in this past week. I was going to wait till I built my new coops etc before building the roll out nest boxes, but i may try and modify my existing set up and build them sooner. Depends on how crazy work stays.
