Icelandic Chickens

AK, I meant to offer my condolances for your losses. It makes me sick when that happens, and I have neighbors who tend to let their dogs 'escape' way too often. I've since taken a zero tolerance policy when it comes to dogs in my yard. Well, zero tolerance to any dogs that show any interest to my chickens anyway. There are a few that show no interest that have survived. I'm just really tired of losing birds to roaming dogs, and I can't be here 24/7 to guard them, and I don't think they enjoy being cooped up when I'm not here, one of the reasons I have too many roosters. I'm hoping it affords at least a tiny bit more security. Wishful thinking probably.

Great idea with the water dish too, I love it!

Mary thats a bad situation, and you have the right to protect yourselves and your livestock,

my answer to him would be an Anatolian or Akbash dog, raise as a pup loose with your chickens(away from donkeys) and it will solve the jrt s . You might consider two new hot wires, one inside the fence so the donkeys wont get in petting distance and the bottom one for the dogs, thats probably your best answer right now.

Day #1 for the eggs, no pippin yet. Should be the 2nd through 4th , give or take a week.

I vote for the electric fence... I have seen them with just 1 wire along the bottom. Nothing can get in, nothing can get out.
It sucks that some people "just don't get it ".

As usual...enjoying this thread and the pictures.

Mary, I'm sorry to hear that your neighbor has no respect for your requests not to pet your donkeys and continues to let his dogs run loose. I second the suggestion to put electric wire near the ground on the outside of your perimeter fence and inside the top of it. The donkeys will not want to put their heads over the fence that way (though I doubt Diane can!). Michael may want to "keep the peace" with neighbors, and that is admirable, too bad your neighbors don't want the same thing.

Kim, Sorry to hear that you, too, have a neighbor that doesn't "get it" when it comes to keeping control of their animal. You can bet it'd be a different story if it was your animal causing a problem at their place.

Michelle, What a handy hubby you have! Mine is handy, but would never take on a "chicken project" without me there to insist!

Update on the Icelandic broody watch......I moved Anna into a separate coop last night with her golf ball clutch. We'll see this morning if she's on them or trying to get out, and back to the Ice House.

She hasn't layed an egg in three days now so I will be removing Asta's and her eggs from the incubator, placed in there this past weekend, and letting her hatch them. I was going to try and leave her in the Ice House but I caught one of the Muscovy girls trying to roust her from her nest on Sunday so thought I would move her, for her own safety. She is a third of the size of the scovy girl and those ducks can cause some damage with their bills. There are ten (10) nest boxes, two rows of five, why pick the one with the broody in it?! On the top row?! The other duck girl just uses one of the lower nests. Don't have a way right now to keep the ducks from entering the pop door that opens to the free range area. They may just have to have their own space........

OK Mary I'm going to tell you exactly what you something similar to what you told me a few days ago, "you are doing a wonderful job with your birds, and are a very caring flock owner" don't get depressed, things happen...

Thank you! And here's to holding out hope that at least one is female of the three. You all have me worried...

I had them since hatch and I'm pretty sure the one is a girl, if not I'll make it up to you

I was at work and the ad would play and then nothing else. I tried both browsers. Got home and it worked fine, must have been an out of date flashplayer at work. Cool place you have there.
