Icelandic Chickens

They look great, Michelle! How many boys did you end up with? I am sure hoping to get a dozen girls.
My luck though .....

I may have to post pics for Kelly to give me the final tally

Mary, does the neighbor have chickens? Is it possible that Stella was just being social?

No they don't have chickens. The barn is open and it used to house Championship llamas. She was just being Stella. The only green egg layer in a bunch of white egg layers must be tough. So she takes off from time to time!

Jake, you better start looking for the Icelandic word for silver.

This is the chick that I thought was black. As it is drying I see it is a silver color. I have never hatched one this color before. I do have a gunmetal grey hen but she was almost black when she hatched. This one might accidentally get let out of the box.....just kidding.

UPDATE: The highest number of chick that could hatch will be 25. I just removed 5 late quitters. I candled all the ones without pips and these were definitely gone. So I have three left with pips and two without pips, and 20 chicks so far.

Mary,
Have you ever had a runt or a failure to thrive? I have this one little guy. He just is not growing and is light as a feather. I just don't know if he will make it much longer. I watch him and I think he is eating. I dip his beak in water a few times a day. See, this light one, pictured with a couple siblings....

I have had several failure to thrive chicks. Many have rallied and made it. I feed them Pedialyte via a syringe. I don't recall having many, if any Icelandic chicks with failure to thrive. It is amazing how light they are compared to the others. I also put them in a separate area and give them scrambled eggs that I have pulverized. I force a little on them and then they usually eat it themselves. I also like using the Chick Saver in their water.

When you ship day olds they haven't been introduced to food or water, right? These guys all hatched today so they should be fine for shipping?
