Icelandic Chickens

Nooo... Here is the Eggplant. I know you have seen these before. Maybe in my broody video?

It's funny, the turkeys that hatched with the Icelandics fly and forage like them, the turkeys that were hatched without Icelandics fly and forage but they are not as brave and don't appear as quick to solve their own problems (they fly out of their pen and then panic cause they are not in it

The ones I've dubbed my Icelandic turkeys (a royal palm, a midget white and a blue slate) only panic when they are on the outside and see me coming with the treat bucket

Silly birds, they flew out they could just fly back in but the all you can eat buffet seems to make them regress back to "normal" turkeys.

I happen to have some unneeded cabinets that we were looking to re-purpose or free cycle. I guess we now have the answer to THAT question.

Thanks Laree, you rock!!!

I think the smarter the (adult) animal, the longer the period of "infancy" is. That is to say: turkeys are very curious, but dumber than dog crap until they reach adulthood.

I got some Icelandic eggs from wool farm and they have been in the incubator for 2 weeks, 2 days :) They have candled pretty good as far as I can tell. This is my first attempt at incubator hatching and candling. I'm praying for least 4 out of the 12 - I want them pretty badly. Worried because about 4 days ago we had an incident where the incubator accidentally got unplugged, but I did see what seemed to be some movement. I really wanted to hatch them under a broody, but none of my girls were broody at the moment.

As to the turkeys, from what I've seem with ours, they really and truly learn from others. It seems like the ones hatched without their momma have a lot more to figure out and it takes them a lot longer to figure it out. My son decided to risk the blackhead-chickens-with-turkeys thing and put some chickens in there with them because they couldn't figure out how to forage or even scratch by themselves! The Royal Palms seem to pick up pretty fast though, better than the other ones. We have pretty much decided that any more we raise to keep will be momma-brooded and raised. Might stick the ones for holiday dinner or to sell in the incubator.
