Icelandic Chickens

Your Hens could benefit by taking a little road trip to visit your brothers farm once a month and if they visit with the resident Roos while they are over there..... Any little roos could go visit your brother until they are processable.

Sorry about that though.

I am so sorry Mahonri! It stinks when that happens.

There is a lot of land for sale up here in Mi, and the hottest temp of the summer was 100 degrees for only one day, and we have the Michigan right to farm Law.

The Barnevelders are beautiful, but six months and no eggs?? Ouch.

Cool sept morn here, 46, and damp, had a great weekend so far, a big craft/artist fair in my sons village, it drew a huge crowd. I enjoyed it, I usually dont care for big crowds like that but everyone was real laid bac k and enjoying themselves. I did too.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens and Pack Goats !

Right now words just totally escape me, I would just get out of there and leave them to their own self inflicted miserys.

Mary congrats to Michael, thats great doing. That can be one of the most comfortable rides there is.

Serious countdown is going on now, 11 days to go !! To Wa land of mtns and forests, and nearest neighbor a half mile away and others much further, no complaining about roos or goats !!!!!

Let the countdown begin Jake!

Mahonri, still thinking about you.

Michelle, looking forward to barn progress pics from the weekend.

BYC is always slow over the weekend and even slower over a holiday weekend. Just us losers still at home by the computer!

I would rather be here than any place on earth though. I love it that much.

Oh, my news! The people from Santa Cruz took all 24 Icelandic chicks yesterday!

They are going to be a real asset to the preservation effort. They love Iceland, raise Icelandic horses, and have a teenage daughter interested in endangered animals. So I only have five chicks I have to raise in the brooder, my five from two weeks ago. Then of course there are the 20 chicks with broody Mamas and one broody left sitting on five eggs. With my 20 adults I have a potential flock of 50 again! No way am I keeping that many. Most will be roos anyway. Right Kelly?

We were gone yesterday but today we're staying home.

Flock numbers for me are down with the two groups leaving last week but now I have to decide which of Anna and Asta's broods are keepers. I know that of the 7 blondes from Anna's brood, 5 are boys and two girls, and of the browns, 1 is a boy and 3 are girls, so 6 boys and 5 girls total. Asta's (2 1/2 weeks younger) are just starting to show their gender, so when I know for sure, there will be another reduction. Here are some pics of Asta's little crested.....girls(?)......

This is the front view of the chick pictured above with a third behind her....of Asta's 6 blondes, looking like 3 or 4 girls!!!

We have one of the most fascinating Chicken Breeds in the world !! In every way !!

The genetic questions will be years in getting resolved ! Meanwhile we have this great homestead breed to brighten our days.

Mary, I forget, how many hens did you have your first breeding year? I will have a dozen, I hope, and at least 3 roos, maybe 4. Sometime next year I hope to add the leg feathering. And I am going to be watching for other traits that I dont have showing in these. I am probably going to wind up with about 18 hens, I hope to be able to maintain a good amount of diversity with these numbers.

Life is good, and better with Icelandics and Pack Goats !!
