At least when our broodies sit, they have eggs under them..........I seem to remember someone with double digit broodies, no eggs and couldn't get them broken!

You might be able to buy some Icelandic eggs from Boston Bryce. He's getting lots of Icelandics and the fertility is really good.

I have 2 Roos and 10 hens living in a 4x8x4 coop, with a 8x8x3 run... They are doing good in it.. Although I feel like they need more room. With snow covered ground, I havent really let them out much in a few months.
I was getting up to 7 eggs a day from them... but egg production has since slowed down. I had an issue with mites. I now have more dry dirt, and fluff boxes in for them, Since the ground is constantly frozen up here.

Thank you for your replies, everyone. Boston, I'm pleased to meet you.

As I've said before keeping birds like Icelandics is something I am interested in doing for a variety of reasons, some selfish and some altruistic. I do not, however, want to impulsively jump in only to find that I should have thought things through, and that the birds are in conditions that do not meet their needs. This of course assumes that I would be able to jump in in the first place. From what you have all told me, Icelandics can do well in an enclosed run, but are explorers at heart and would benefit from being able to range and forage. Hehe, just like a Viking chicken!

I do have a second question. Are there any organizations in the US that are devoted to the preservation of Icelandics?

Pete
