Icelandic Chickens

My baby Icelandics are the bosses of all the other chicks in the brooder box. Feisty little bounders! I'm afraid they will start flying out of the box and freeze to death. I hope they don't do that!

I had to raise the ecoglow because it was too low and I'm seeing that I should have bought the 50 instead of the 20.

They all get under it and then pile up around it at night.

We really n..e..e..d to see pics of the new Icelandics!

Yes, it is quite small, even though it came from a bigger egg. I had thought that it was being strink wrapped, so I ''helped'' it, but it was not ready for another 6 hours or so. It had lost a lot of blood, I felt so bad. :he I think that it might not make it. Oh, will I ever learn to keep my hands off the bator! :he

Good grief I am not getting emails when someone posts here. I thought y'all moved on.

I'll have to go to my profile and try to figure it out.

I got the DNA results on the emu I hatched and it is a boy! Good thing I bought those other two babies so I have my girls. I am so glad that hatch is over and the 51 days of hand turning 4 x day, weighing eggs, and worrying. It was fun but I am still glad to be done. Just have to raise them now. I put a couple of videos on my blog if you want to see them. We are still working on names.

In Icelandic news, Little Man is in a crate in the garage bound for the feed store tomorrow. The last two days I have watched him sneak up on the roos who are in the act of mating, jump on their backs and start a fight! He even did it to Isi, twice! Today he challenged Isi for power and the fight was on full force. They went at it for a long time until Little Man retreated. Every time Isi saw him the rest of the day he gave chase and ran him far from the coop. Jeeze, no wonder the fertility is 30%. Little Man signed his own walking papers with his actions today.

I have three juveniles who are coming along nicely so he will not be missed. One is the guy with the outrageous red crest. He is the spitting image of Little Man except for the crest and less white tail fluff. Then I have two black and white mottled ones. Today the black and white crested one came up to the house where I was feeding treats of chopped up cinnamon rolls. He grabbed a piece and ran back sown to the coop and gave it to BarnGirl! She still limps too badly to walk up here. It was the sweetest thing. So minus Little Man I have 24 Icelandics.

My Isbar is laying nearly every day and my cream legbars are maturing nicely. I have 8 Icelandic eggs in one Brinsea and about 28 in the other. Not keeping any.

Hope every one is getting used to the new format. It turns out to not be too much slower for me and so far we haven't gone over our daily allowance. That makes me happy. Love the pics Daron and Mary. I gotta go get a blog post written. Has anyone heard from Jake? Maybe he is busy learning how to post pics.

Mary, Will you be keeping your third emu boy or will you try and rehome him? Have you got names for the two new girls?
I have been keeping a close eye on the dynamics of my roosters. Audun seems to have control over the other three. When I go out to the coop in the morning, the two "B" boys are up high in the rafters. Dreki is on the half-wall and Audun is on the floor with the hens. He is the first one out the door to check things out for the girls and call them out for scratch when I toss it.
There is a Spell Check on the Editor. It is the very last tab, has the ABC and check on it. For the email notice from subscriptions, go to your Profile and chose Edit Account Details. Scroll down and there is a link for Email Preferences which has a link for "edit subscriptions". Click that and it will list threads you are subscribed to and you will see a box to chose the frequency you want to be notified. If this thread is not listed, Make sure you click on the subscribe that is at the top and bottom of the thread. Pics for me are easier, click on the icon (for me it's the first one on the left of the second row in the full page editor-in the quick reply at the bottom of the thread, it's the square picture in the same bar as the smilie icon) that says "insert image" when you hover over it, click on it and a box will appear, click on the "Browse" and go get your picture. I unclick the "save a copy to my default album" because the default album is public and I'm not leaving photos in there. The picture will show up in the post where your cursor is.
I find it time-consuming to relearn things but I'm getting there.......
A pic of Audun will be posted below.......I was in another tab while I was typing this so I didn't steer you wrong.....so will post the picture I was using as my "helper"!
Seinna, The Other Mary
