I got all the standby roosters separated out, two to go to Robin at Chickenstock, one little guy for a pet home, and Bjorn waiting til July to breed some hens, hopefully in May sometime I can start saving eggs from the BBRedwing guy. He and the girls are getting along just fine right now. It does look like we will be getting a LOT of the chipmunks this year with both roosters having been chipmunks. Which for free ranging chickens should be a bit extra protection in camoflage.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens

I was very surprised~shocked~astonished~ to find out yesterday that a certain ********* is offering Icelandic Chickens. I have read many pages of this thread at the beginning. Do you guys and gals know about this? I am truly not trying to stir up trouble. I have been following the thread in the beginning and was taken in by the Icelandic's charm. And I did read about how people were trying to be very careful about where these chickens were placed. It is just a real shock to me. Anyone can pm me if you like. I sure would like to know a little more about how this happened and if it is a good or bad thing?. Thanks

A BYC member here got her original Icelandic as part of an assortment from Sandhill last fall. She didn't know what it was until she posted on BYC and someone said it looked like an Icelandic. Perhaps call Sandhill and ask where they got their stock what kind of facilities they have to ensure purity if you're thinking about getting some.

Like I've told some who have asked....if you don't have a way to keep them absolutely pure, that's the way it is.....but do not refer to them as Icelandics if they are some kind of cross, because they are not. What makes them an Icelandic is not the way they look, it's their genetic makeup that hasn't been "monkied with", that's what makes them Icelandic. If you cross them, they can never be Icelandic again. It's not like crossing a chocolate orp into ameraucanas and then "breeding back to the proper shape/egg color/comb.........you can not "get back to" the genetic uniqueness that makes an Icelandic what it is.

OK.....off the soap box now......

I am the member who got the Icelandic from sandhill, and although they are a small hatchery, their focus has been preservation of species and seeds. A Science teacher and his wife run it and are very honest about their stock. Saying this, I still want to triple check that their stock is pure before I breed my roo to my future ( i hope) hens. The excitement of this breed is in their history and diversity, while having rare genetic purity!

OMG I am cracking up. I was just looking at the stat's for my website. It shows google searches that lead people to my site. Today someone searched "Judge Judy naked " and got directed to the picture of my naked neck chicken, Judge Judy! Laughing my arse off!
