My broody crushed one of her cream Legbar eggs today. Yolk, blood and deceased little male chick. It had pipped earlier in the day. She has one left but I think it's a goner too. Poor thing. She is a Welsummer who has been broody for weeks.

My Isbar broody is really doing a good job except she leaves the nest for other girls to lay their egg in there with her baby! Today there was only one egg and she was getting her feathers ruffled and growled when Bjorn was watching her and the baby through the vent screen from outside. Here she is trying to get the baby to go outside with her but the baby won't budge.



Look how dark it's little wing feathers are coming in.



Oopps, forgot to add the shot of the beginning of the Icelandic flock rebuild. Six Lukka/Isi eggs! I set them today. I will set the nest six when collected too.

Nice Legbar pullets Mary. I wonder what part of the gene gave them there crest. guess I should read the Legbar thread.


I am excited to see what my new icelandic babies grow up to look like. though young one seems to have some grey-lavender coloring on the wings..

I loved your story I was lucky enough to find a breeder of Icelandic chickens and was able to get 3. I have been told in the last few days that I can no longer have chickens. I have had my flock for almost 2 years now and do not know what to do. I was told I can not have them I am zoned R-2 residential but I have the baby Icelandic chicks that are only 2 months old and I won't get to see them grow up to be the beautiful birds they are going to be. I loved seeing your birds and reading your story though mine is not so good. Thanks for the wonderful story.

Thanks for the kind compliment chicktrouble. I am so sorry about your problem. Probably a dumb question, but can you move? Being allowed to have more chickens was one of the reasons I decided to move, that, and the five pitbulls next door.
I hope you are able to work something out to allow you to keep them.

Chicktrouble where do you live? Pehaps there is another Icelandic breeder near you that you can cooperate with somehow.

Moving is a major option, ifnot now then down the road .
