Most of mine are still pullets so I don't know yet. They definitely go broody and make good Moms, sometimes a little too good like my sweet Lukka, Supermom.

Hi Mary,
I'm still reading through this LONG thread and it is so interesting to read about these chickens. What a great picture of a "Smother Mother"!

Hi Lynn

One thing to keep in mind about the Icelandic Chicken is that they are a true Landrace breed, that was isolated for a very long time, it was introduced to Iceland in the 800s, and from early on all other imports of livestock were barred. At first this was a very biased towards Norwegian view, and later it was to prevent both outside diseases and mixtures into the bloodstock of foreign breeds.

Another thing is that the Silkie genes are relatively new to Europe, compared to the origination of the Icelandic, and it happened long after the closing of imports to Iceland.

One of my frayed roosters had a silkie 'look' when he was younger but has totally grown out of it, his present defects in feathering are a couple crooked wing feathers, but has good leg feathering, I am hoping to find a pet home for him, he is very quiet and gentle.

Mary I am hoping that my Verizon modem works up there, ifnot will have to find another way.

37days to launch date.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !
