Icelandic Chickens

Daron - Congrats on the calf!  Everybody at your house is having babies!

Mary - Fjola is a beautiful..............pullet. :D

Thanks! My oldest brother's wife is due in October for their first child! :woot

NotAFarm- I agree with Kelly- Its a pullet! Happy for you!

I treated my flock with permethrin for they had mites, and put all the hens in the pens with the right roosters. I will treat them with Denagard on Monday. On Tuesday, I will start saving the eggs to rebuild my flock. Let the rebuilding process begin!

Ok, let me catch up. My splash Isbar broody has turned out to be a great mama. Here is a video I took yesterday. I love the way the baby grooms itself like mama!

Here they are today.

The easter hatch Mama cream legbar is out in the big coop/yard now with her "babies." They sleep in a nest box at night but practice on the last rung of the ladder during the day. She is an amazing girl! I am almost afraid of her as an adult broody. She's seven weeks old now! Move over Lukka! Babies are four weeks old.

Wellie broody has been sitting for several weeks. She smashed her pipped egg and killed the baby ad her other egg didn't hatch. So in desperation today I went to the feed store to get a day old chick for her. There chicks were huge! I picked a Sicilian Butterup because it was small. They said it just came in today. Day old? It has wing feathers! I gave the baby to Chatty Cathy and she seemed confused.

Later in the day Deb (debs_flock) was visiting. We went over to the coops and the Buttercup was outside cruising around the yard and the Wellie was still in the nest box. Baby must have fallen out, I tried getting my splash Isbar to accept the chick. She tolerated it and let it tag along with her and her baby outside. Later I found it wandering alone in the Isbar yard. I picked it up and headed for the screen room to set it up in a brooder. It was cheeping loudly. Suddenly Chatty Cathy comes running out of the coop shrieking and running around the yard. I went in and put the Buttercup on the grass. They ran to each other like in the slow motion movie scenes. I sat in the lawn chair and observed for about fifteen minutes as Chatty taught the baby to drink. Showed it the food. Scratched in the dirt with it. It was amazing. As the baby walked, Cathy circled it to guide it where she wanted it to go. I was so happy that Cathy is a mama. I put them in the small broody coop for the night so that the baby will be safe. I checked on them tonight and Cathy bit me. That is not her style. I can always pick her up and carry her around like a pet chicken. Chickens are amazing creatures when you think about it. That's a happy baby and mama tonight!

Nice pics Mary! Beautiful as always.

Daron, congratulations, Have you gotten the DNA results back? I am so curious.

Kathy, congrats on the hatch! What's up with the cream legbars? Those thongs are hard to hatch. Hopefully yours are just taking their sweet time. Those Isbar babies hit the ground running. Not like Icelandics of course but they are active little buggers.

Good news on my incubator. I did some tweaking and lowered the temp a couple of degrees. I also hooked up the humidity pump and set it to 40%. I have eggs that are on Day 11. Only one has quit out of 30! I set another 30 eggs four days ago and all but one are developing! That means I have 59 Isbar eggs incubating! I have a couple of chick orders to fill. I am a nervous wreck about how many will actually hatch!

Best news of all. I set Lukka's first 6 eggs three days ago. Eggs 2 through 6 are veining! Only number 1 appears infertile. I am keeping it in a couple of days to be sure. Even Michael is excited about this hatch!

As I mentioned in another post Deb and her hubby came by today and we had a great visit. She has Isbars due to hatch soon too!

Just got back from Novato.
Picked up 5 chicks.
1 may be a welsummer strictly but the other 4
are Cream Legbar x Crele Penedesenca/welsummer crosses. I plan on breeding these back to my penedesenca to see if I can get a cool spin on the olive egger. cool fact is they appear to be auto sexed crosses. I will try and get pic's up. one is more grey with a larger white spot on the head. rest are more brown color.. this is similar to what the crele penedesenca hatch like.
males more grey females brown.
I know this is not the right thread but the legbar's get alot of love here to so thought I would share my story....
I am super excited to see if i can get autosexed olive egger crosses.....
