Icelandic Chickens

Just a quick update for all of you that have been asking me about the importation process in the forum and in private messages. I have sent in an import application and am waiting to hear back from the USDA. I will keep you updated on the progress.

Fingers crossed!

, and please keep us updated, and what the heck the process actually is.

The importation regulations are all right here: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/poultry_eggs.shtml

Nice people. They even answer the phone. I'd have Sigrid hook me up while she's still over there but I don't think the paperwork could be completed in time.

I'd share the chicks with her when she gets back! Well, not the really pretty ones and the girls of course.

I'll try to coordinate that next time she goes.

Oh, forgot to mention, the two replacements for the culverts I destroyed were delivered today.

Remember my neighbor who told me his 3 Jack Russell terriers could still come onto my property because they were here before I was? That's his dummy in the driveway to scare people off. OOh, I am so shaking! Old fool!

Oh, yeah, and the Mom and baby geese came to visit today! Look how grown up they are! Oh, and I am not reporting this to anyone but she has an extra baby now. Just sayin'. Could have been an adoption I suppose.

THANKS for the link. I'll have to see if any Icelandic pups are coming into the U.S. or someone coming to pick up a pup, maybe they would bring us some hatching eggs.

Get me a couple of sheep and a horse too!

My neighbor keeps trying to sell me Icelandics horses. She has some gorgeous ones but recently downsized a bunch. She runs a non-profit riding program for kids with special needs. I have always declined what with Jack and his issues and all.

Sheriff, you didn't really have to pay for that, did you ? I hope not, that looked like normal wear and tear, and would have to eventually be replaced from the day it was originally put in place.

The irrigation company hasn't decided yet. Turns out a big truck owned by the county caused the problem. The guy was driving over the top and went too far over to the right, the culvert gave way and his wheel sank into the hole. The truck had to be towed out. The neighbors are reporting the story but substituting my motorhome for the county truck!

Good luck!

Importation seems to be a fairly straight forward deal as far as the US side of things goes, you fill out a simple one page form (linked through the page the Sheriff posted: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/poultry_eggs.shtml) and, if approved, after 5-10 business days you receive permit, which costs $145. From what I've been told that part seems like it is not so hard. A bigger challenge is finding breeders that are willing to take on the considerable hazzle of obtaining the tests and certificates needed to clear the eggs from the other side of the pond. I know breeders that have sold eggs, with papers, for export before and would like to continue to sell abroad but have had such a bad time with the bureaucracy that they've stopped. Then, of course, there is the issue of the inspection when you arrive with eggs at the airport, which I understand can range from friendly to totalitarian.

Thankfully am blessed enough to have access to lots of help from wonderful folks back home that have been willing to go through so much trouble for me to realize my dream of having an Icelandic backyard flock. I honestly don't know if I could be doing this otherwise.

Oh, if you have a chance check with your neighbor about Icelandic horses being cart trained, or if they are only for riding. I would love a cart trained Icelandic horse.
