Idaho?

Well it was 110 here today and my hens were so hot I hate it but I have to say the gal Jugs of frozen water did help them some I put one in the hen house in a  bowl  at 7 am and it still had some ice in it this evening and the one under the hen house was melted but they had the fresh water that was some what cool all day long. I hope this hot weather calms down a bit. Oh and the 2 hens that kept going up a tree instead of going in the hen house finally went in tonight , might be that I had the sprinkler going right were they have been going to get to the tree but what ever it might be I am glad they are going into the house now.... but now we got this dang wind going on just hoping that it don't cause more trouble.

Amen to all of that! Wind, Heat going away and hens going to bed proper. All good things! I have been hosing my girls down twice in the afternoon, they were so mad at me a few days ago but today for the first time when I went out with the hose they hardly flinched. I think they are getting the idea ;)

ok so I got a question anyone here gotten chickens from Dunlaps?
I bought some hens from a man and he said he got them from the store and when he got them he said they had clipped their beaks to take the points off them so now their beaks are I think too long and one of them her beak is so blunted that she has trouble picking up bugs and she is sooooooooooooo friendly I just don't know what to do I paid this man $10 ea for these hens only to realize they are not in as good a shape as I thought I worry about them eating well and 2 of them I can't seem to keep in my yard and I have clipped their wings they get on top of the fence and up in a tree by the fence I let my hens all free range and 4 of the 6 of them use the coop and are doing great. I sorta wish I didn't get the two red leghorns I like the white sex link and black sex links I have real well. if I could find a way to get another white hen around the same age as my girls I would trade the 2 reds for 1 white sex link mine are 11months old but like I said they do have the beak problems, anyone got any idea what I should do ? the man said he was sure they would be just fine. I have a 4 ft chain-link fence all around my yard and my chia's can't even get out of it so I know they are not walking thru the fence. I would love any advice.
Next time you clip their wings, only clip one side. Otherwise, lightweight birds can still get enough UP power. With one side clipped, they will go off to the side instead of up and will stop trying. I don't know what to say about their beaks.

Ya, I ended up with 4 eggs out of 8 that hatched and made it. Mine should be about ready to start laying as well. My ratio is 1 male to 3 females. About perfect I think.

That is a great ratio! I had 14 hatch, 10 were male lol

I was hoping for 2 boys and 3 girls for each boy. But I kept 2 boys and split the 4 females up amongst them so it is not too bad. The fattest girl laid the first egg.

Question--I read that quail mate for life...so if I wanted to add 1 girl to each trio, will it even work, will they accept her? Looking for two more females but worried about them being accepted.

If it would work, I have been looking for 2 Texas A & M females...that's another question can I mix the two breeds? If not, i would try to find two Jumbo brown Coturnix like these....I LOVE the sound the males make too they are so cute!

I don't know about the mating for life part. But it's my understanding that the Brown is dominant. If you cross a white Texas A&M with a Jumbo Brown, you will end up with more Jumbo Browns.

I went and turned the hose on yesterday with a sprinkler on it and put it under the tree that those dumb hens were getting up into and they went into the house last night I didn't have to put them in YAY!!!!

Hey has anyone tried giving their hens fresh Ice cold corn on the cob my girls just love it and I kinda was mean cause I put it under the sprinklers so they had to go into them to get the corn they just couldn't stand leaving it there they had to go after it. hehehehehe

congrats on the quail egg yay I use to have the button quail when I was raising pet birds and I just love the sounds they make those and the diamond doves

Hey guys!! Been a crazy summer... add camp and family reunions to baseball and I am ready for a vacation, actually, a really long nap would be nice, lol...

I miscounted the eggs in one of my muscovy nests. I though she had 21 eggs.....but there are 22 babies in there!

Hoy moly, that's a lot of babies!! They sure are cute!! Awesome egg from that beautiful GCM pullet!!! YAY!!!!

So I decided to do this after I brought home 4 new orps yesterday and now I have two black that look VERY much alike! This will help me tell them apart for awhile til I learn to notice their little differences. But I'm not going to lie I LOVE IT! HAHAH

That is awesome!! I vote hen on the buff orpington

we are moving from Athens GA

Welcome!! I would say those breeds you liked in GA should do fine here in ID... unless you want to try something new, of course =)

I've been gone this month.. family reunion, trek, scout encampment, work etc.. haven't had time to do much but keep up..

When we went out to do chores tonight we found Porter, our Great Pyrenees had died. I believe he was poisoned... Has not been a fun night... wish we lived out there so the neighbors couldn't get away with stuff like this.. I need an LGD to keep everyone else safe but am afraid to get another one until we live out there..

Sorry for the downer post but knew my BYC friends are there for support!

Oh my goodness Shawn, that is beyond words... Jeff (my DH) is telling me you should get an autopsy, can you do that on animals?? But then how would you be able prove anything?? Oh.. now Jeff is saying you need cameras out there... you can get some that aren't that expensive, and you can rewind them in time sections till you find the spot you are looking for...

Nampa Idaho here, Hiya Idaho ppl :)
WELCOME!!

I got my first quail egg today

Icyoldhen--these were the babies I hatched from your eggs. They won't be 6 weeks old until Thursday. I was so excited, I did not expect that

Yay for first eggs!! Lisa... that olive egger pullet is holding out on me for her first egg... she is red as can be so ANYDAY now girlie, sheesh!!

My legbar and wheaten marans chicks are really growing out nicely, it's making me really excited for hatching next year!! I will selling my extra legbars probably as a trio this fall once I decide who I am keeping, if there is anyone interested later on this year... The extra wheaten marans roos are going to freezer camp, I am keeping all the pullets until they lay, hehe.... Just put some shipped eggs with actually decent air cells under a broody hen for lockdown, so hopefully I will have some rhodebar and swedish flower hen chicks within the next week, too (they will all be for sale)...
