Idaho?

Pics
Hey everybody! Been busy keeping everybody cool in this heat. I plan on posting some pics as soon as I read the how-to thread (hopefully there is one!)

The pullets are doing great. Unfortunately, our 3 month old Aussie mix killed our light brahma. :( It was absolutely our fault and we both feel awful. My husband forgot he let them out and I let the puppy out and we weren't out there with them. When we are out there the puppy won't even think about it, but being left to his own devices he decided to give chase. Very sad. The light brahma was my favorite bird. The pup always watched him close though. I don't know if it was the contrast of his white feathers against the yard, but he always kept his eye on her.

Anybody ever have this happen and have their dog grow up to be able to be calm and good around the pullets? I don't really buy in to the whole 'once they've tasted blood' mentality so just looking for the best way to let the pup know that those are ours and not his.

Hope everybody is keeping cool and staying away from these fires.

Thanks!

They come in little 4 packs, about as big as peppers, then get big like tomato plants, really fast, and have tons of berries. They are the size of a large blueberry. Andersen Seed here in Logan sells them every April. I will grab some for you next spring and bring them on one of my Idaho trips

That would be way beyond great and appreciated to the moon! Hubby calls me huckleberry hound...

Well my story with dogs and chickens may not help.....my dog gives chase as well, and killed one last spring, I thought he had gotten better with the bigger girls as they grew, one pecked him on the nose once so he was a little more scared. Then one day he killed another. It seemed like he had truly "had his taste" then could not stop. Then we started keeping him in the house, and letting him out only when someone was there to watch. He was let out again a few months ago by my son, who forgot, he killed another....he just tried to pull the head of one through the chicken wire the other day, he has become relentless. You just think he is over it, then BAM he strikes again.! He seems to be getting worse not better. He tore the screen door out to make a hole and get out back to try to get at them again. Now we cannot leave the patio screen shut, we have to shut the glass door. Stinker.

We always yell at him if he gets aggressive, we have tried everything from treats for sitting away from them to slapping his butt when he goes by them and really letting him have it. If they start to flap, his instincts take over.

Yeah, whispers... that sounds about right on those huckleberries... I have seen the seeds for sale on another heritage seed website besides Bakers... can't remember the name... in Missouri...

Okay... more questions for everybody...

Who here uses Diatomeceous Earth (sp?) in their runs/nest boxes?? And/or what else do you use to disinfect/prevent bugs?? They are talking about the DE a lot on the UT thread, and I have seen some of the articles on here about it, so now I'm curious how many of you use it??

AND... how many of you are still incubating right now?? Again, those silly UT people are all setting eggs this weekend.. they are crazy on there, seriously!! (But still glad to call them friends=) (esp. Lisa, lol)
Maybe, I should join the UT crazies. We had a houseful of guests for my mom's memorial over the week end. Most had not seen chicks hatch. They got an eyeful Sat when the black Wyandotte bantams hatched. Almost as fun to watch them as to watch the chicks hatch. There are still some eggs in the bator from the BBRed OEGB's we got from judge Tracy Hill. We have extras from the Black wyandottes if anyone is interested. Newbies to 2 weeks old. We can keep them until they are feathered out enough for no heat. Who knew their hatch rate would be so great this time of year...
Someone should konk me on the head. Instead of eating a chocolate bar for comfort I won an auction(s) for english orpingtons, ummm black, BBS, and Jubilee. lol OMGosh... would have been cheaper to eat the chocolate! haha

Anyone know if the Idaho Bird Breeders Assoc is still kick'in? Web site is no longer there...

Sorry to hear about your loss. We had aussies that did not bother the chickens once they became adults. They figured out the chickens were part of the family and ignored them. Hopefully yours will do the same!

Thanks for the story. Sounds like something we may have to do but we shall see. I have a feeling it will be just like when he is around the baby - never without one of us near him. If that's what it takes, that will be okay. We let the girls out pretty much all day to run around the yard and feed - they were addicted to it after the first time! He's a good puppy and I can tell he wants to please, so it's just a matter of taking the time to teach him that they are our friends, and not his lunch.
