Idea for drain for ducks' pool -- whatcha think?

I think that's called a siphon, and I still think that only works if the end of the hose is lower than the surface of the water to be drained. You can make the water flow up through the hose as long as it's ultimately going out lower than the surface.

This is what's happening with my duck pool. I can get the water to empty through the drain and through the hose as long as the end of the hose is lower than the surface of the pool's water. And since the pool is in the duck's pen which is in the lowest part of the paddock and the garden beds are at a slightly higher elevation, the water won't drain. Even when I used all 100' of hose and stretched it out to a somewhat low spot in a garden, it only drained half-way. At that point, the pool's surface must have been lower than that low spot in the garden.

I intentionally sited the duck's pen in that part of the yard since it occasionally floods during weeks of heavy rain. I figured they wouldn't mind the wet as much as the chickens do. I had originally planned to just put a simple drain in this pool, as an improvement over lifting & dumping the water daily. Then someone suggested diverting the water to other places in the yard, a brilliant idea. But I just didn't factor in the drainage issues.

I'm just going to keep trying different places to put the end of the drainage hose, looking for the most effective spot. I can get it to drain out through 1.5" PVC to the middle of the yard, at least that's better than draining right next to the duck pen.

Any other brilliant ideas, good people?
