Idea for getting eggs from other cities without shipping

Has anyone ever thought about finding someone to hand-deliver eggs for a fee? A while back, there was a dog on petfinder that I really wanted, but he was about a two day drive away, which is simply not feasible for me with three young children. So I started getting creative. What ended up (almost) working (and only didn't work because the adoption agency found a good home locally and, understandably, chose that over having him taken elsewhere) was this:

I searched the craigslist for the other city, and also posted a "wanted" ad in that city. I found a guy who was advertising that he would drive anyone anywhere they wanted to go for the cost of gasoline plus a small mileage fee. He said he just wanted to visit new places, and this was a cheap way for him to do so. I contacted him and asked if he'd be willing to transport a dog if we lodged him overnight in Charlotte, and how much that would be.

I don't remember how much it came to, but it was very reasonable--less than $100, I'm sure, and closer to $50 I think.

Anyway, I realize $50 is a LOT to pay to transport eggs. However, if it were a very rare variety or something you simply can't get any other way, would that be better than risking the eggs?

Or, perhaps if you searched longer than I did, you could find someone who was already planning to make the trip and would be willing to carry the eggs carefully to you for a very small fee. I know there are agencies that arrange this sort of thing for children as well as deliveries of valuable, delicate items. Maybe there's a way to do it for eggs too.

It would take more legwork, but would it be worth it?

This is all hypothetical on my part. Right now, I'm pretty content ordering day-olds when I need new stock and brooding what I produce or can find locally. But I know lots of folks have trouble with shipped eggs and I was wondering if this would be a workable solution. What do you think?

(Edited to make that first sentence actually make sense.

I think it's a great idea. I am a picture framer by trade and I know that my sales reps put on many miles and usually cover a 3-4 state area. I don't know if they would have company policies regarding that sort of thing but I have good relationships with many of them and wouldn't hesitate to at least ask.

Maybe there are some people on this forum that are sales reps and could chime in.
