I ordered some Blue Red OEG from Ideal this spring. shipped through my local feed store. Beautiful birds. Looked just like they were supposed to. So, I had good luck with them. Although, some of the roos came out black (naturally. the blue gene. ) and one rooster was really big and one was really small. So idk about that.
"Correct colors"? No. If you want that you need to purchase from a breeder.
The hatchery birds are FINE for routine egglaying. meat. or pet purposes.
If you are interested in fine breeding stock with "correct colors" you should specify that interest a bit more clearly here on the forum and then seek out a reputable breeder of the animals in which you are interested. You will certainly pay more but you will get chicks that are much closer to standard.
Depends on what you're looking for. I have white faced black Spanish from Ideal that are as up to standard as any I've seen in shows and competitions. Of course, I have 16 of them, 4 males and 12 females. Out of that group, probably 2 of the males would be considered show quality and only maybe 2 of the females. The rest are wonderful pets and great members of my flock.
Depending on breed, you do occasionally get a good standard bird from a hatchery... I have had good luck with birds from Ideal and My Pet Chicken. But for the most part, what you are going to get will be great pet-quality and layer-quality stock from pretty much any hatchery.
my hatchery blue red hen is only slightly paler in color to my breeder blue red hens. other than that, they are nearly identical. If you're looking for exhibition birds, best to find a breeder. But if you just want birds that look close to the standard, hatchery is fine. And some birds may not come out exactly like mine. I lucked up. Some may not look that good.
