I ordered from Ideal and they didn't send my 5 Buff Orph pullets, but instead sent 5 BR roo's. Worked out in the end and they didn't charge me for them. All were healthy and none died.
Try them again - maybe someone there had a bad day.
Hey, I was considering buying some chicks in small numbers from the website "my pet chicken". I would order some from Ideal or others but this website says it can sex the bantams! Is this true?? Can Ideal sex bantams?
1much - Ideal has their own breeders on a farm not too far from their hatchery.
You can not expect show/breeder quality birds from hatcheries (unless you ordered from Stromberg's limited offering/specialty breeder list). You might, out of 100 of the same breed, find one that was close but even that is very rare.
Now, my personal experiences with Ideal hatchery have been great. I've lost chicks too, either to post office mis-handling or just in general weak chicks. In both instances, Ideal was more than willing to make things right. I'd go back to them at any time, and likely will next year.
We have made 2 seperate orders from Ideal, one for 16 guineas and one for 16 chickens and it was nothing short of a wonderful experience.
We did not lose one bird in either shipment, all arrived healthy and the order was perfectly filled. Granted, we did order in August when we did not have to worry about the cold weather....but that would not have been the fault of the hatchery anyway.
I would just keep trying to call. I honestly am scared to order from anyone BUT Ideal!
When I lived on the mainland, I ordered 60 pheasant chicks from McMurray and lost them all within 48 hours to a respiratory infection. They replaced them, but half of that shipment died also. Hence, I tried Ideal when I needed chicks here in Hawaii. The website gave me some problems at first, but I got a prompt e-mail confirmation and a person on-line to answer my questions. The chicks came overnight, all were perfect and have survived their first week. Plus, they just offered me a 25% discount on a re-order if made within 2 weeks.
All in all, a primo experience and I plan to order again from them in Spring.
I too will order from Ideal again. Great service and fair prices.
A few things to take in to consideration when ordering chicks from anyone.
Season/weather: It may be lows in the 60s and highs in the 90's when you look out your window, but take a peek at where the birds are coming from and the path they might travel to get to you. If it is a blizzard in the mid west, or a storm between the hatchery and your home that can alter shipping, you can't really blame anyone for the weather. One suggestion is to order in late spring, early fall, when temps around the country are moderate so chicks don't freeze to death or over heat in transit.
Shipping: If you decide to order from a hatchery that is located 5000 miles away, those birds have to travel those 5000 miles to reach you. Perhaps consider trying out a hatchery which is 500 or even 1000 miles away. Might be a shorter less stressful trip. Once those babies leave the hatchery in the boxes, it is up to the delivery system to get them to you.
Mistakes: Hatcheries big and small have to work fast to sort thousands of birds, put them into the right boxes, in the right combinations, and get them in the truck for delivery. They literally don't have the time to carefully hold, inspect and woo over the babies as one could do if hatching a dozen eggs at home. From hatch to home in 72 hours is the goal, or the chicks won't even have a chance.
Reviews: When reading reviews, always keep in mind, a satisfied customer will likely tell a few, a dissatisfied one will often raise a storm and tell a dozen. If a product or service is used by billions every year, there are bound to be mistakes, especially in the peak seasons or off seasons where workers are overtaxed or seasonal workers are gone respectively.
