In February I was able to order 25 Brown Danish Leghorns on special and 6 Black Sex Links. Also 1 Rouen straight run duck. They all arrived alive but 3 were weak. I lost 1 within a day and another a day after that. The third one made it and I can't even tell which one it was. The ladies at Ideal were very friendly when I placed the order and when I called about my lost weak chicks. The reason I chose the 25 was because of a special they were running. I didn't know what I was doing because it was the first time I had ever ordered chicks. 31 chicks with a duck was probably a little ambitious but they have been happy enough and I have been overworked enough to get good rest at night. I actually added 1 more duck that was supposed to be for sure female from Ideal from through the feedstore that has turned out to be a male. They have sent 2 replacement females so that 1 doesn't have to live in the brooder alone. Since the first purchase I have purchased a several other breeds from Ideal through the feedstore and have been very satisfied. Overall, I wouldn't purchase from anywhere else in the near future because I have been satisfied with the experience. However, I won't be ordering in the near future because I have plenty right now!

So Ideal told me that they will refund the dead animals. But has yet to do so. I guess this will be the third time trying to deal with them on the phone... *sigh* why didn't I stick to hatching eggs?

bummer to bad you aren't closer i would give you a few chicks. but i totally hear you my experience with Meyers put me off of hatchery's for a good long time. i still want to do an experiment with some meat chickens closer to next spring but i would like to get the boilers through a breeder not a hatchery if at all possible.

I guess for full disclosure though, I live about 2 hours or less from Ideal. I have never been there but the chicks weren't with the post office for long after they were packed up. That probably gives me a little advantage. There is less exposure to heat or cold and they have access to food and water sooner. Anyway, I thought it was relevant once I considered how much further some of you are from Ideal.

did the chick live?
Unfortunately, my father didn't think that they could raise the chick outside in the cold together so he took the chick inside to care for it. It lived less than a week. I have the feeling that the cat and hen would have done better. After all, they worked together for twenty-one days to get it to hatch and however many it was before my dad removed the chick.
