Ideal Poultry's Black East Indie ducks

That's what I was going to say.

I know there's a person within an hour of me who raises nice little Black East Indies, and through Craigslist I've found several people who raise Mallards and Call ducks in my area - I keep in touch with a few of them.

I got some from them a couple years ago. They were pretty big for BEI, I would say pet quality. They did (most of them) have the nice green sheen in the sun, but some developed white feathers. Don't expect show birds from a hatchery. Amazingly, one of the ones I got from them had a Crest! I was thrilled to say the least.

If you want pet quality, go for it, but from my experience they aren't picky as to what they send you. I got several today with bad birth defects that had to be culled.

Sorry to say, but most, not all, hatchery ducks are not of show quality...hatcheries don't control their breeding

THAT.

If you want possible show quality ducks, contact Holderread's. If you just want pet quality, call a hatchery.

I have Welsh Harlequins. The ones from Metzer are perfectly healthy happy ducks, but they are NOT show quality by any stretch of the imagination. They quack, lay eggs and look cute like they are supposed to so I am perfectly happy with them. My Holderread's ducks do all the previous AND look fabulous. You will pay more for the Holderread's ducks. Whether or not they are worth the extra expense is entirely dependent on your situation.

I believe that Holderread's only sells the BEIs as adults. They are wonderful though, and I don't think the prices are extreem or anything. It does depend on what you order, and it is more than HQ ducks, but well worth it. And like others have said, a some what local breeder may be your best bet as well, especially if they are local. You may pay more for the ducks or ducklings, but shipping wouldn't be an issue. Good luck!
