ideal

Love Ideal so far. I have ordered 42 chicks from them this year. All chicks survived to eight weeks old robust and ready to go until a hawk decimated my flock. I just got 12 more (the last of the 42 above I hope) and they are adorable. I read all of the posts about Ideal and MG and decided that there will isn't a MG free hatchery and may never be. Love the birds! I am so excited.

Hmm....had no idea about this MG. I just received an Ideal order less than 2 weeks ago and no issues at all, just cute healthy fuzzy babies!

And consistent with my addiction, right this moment I am TRYING to resist ordering me some turkens from Ideal

But I need some more EE's, so I may just go ahead

I am confident that if there were any TRUE MG issues, Ideal would not be shipping birds.

I agree miss_jayne! I ordered from Ideal in January of this year,
all 25 pullets are happy and healthy and laying!
I just got another order from them yesturday, all are alive, active!
I will order from them again this spring!

Ideal has openly said they have MG in their flocks... on this forum.

MG is a tricky disease and does pass through eggs. Ideals claims that their flocks are MG Positive.... which basically means they have had an outbreak of the disease... and now the birds are ok, either through meds or through waiting it out and letting the birds immune system take care of it.

However... the disease is never gone. It can relapse at any given time if the birds are stressed. Also not to forget that the eggs from these breeders will be passed on to the offspring through the egg. There is a good chance that it won't but it is very possible and it only takes one bird to infect thousands.

I'm not questioning Ideals customer service or their company. But I for one will not buy birds anymore unless I have a certificate from NPIP stating their birds are clean.

I just received Silkies and Guineas from Ideal on Thursday and all arrived very alive and healthy. This is my first order from them and the only problem I had was I only received 4 of the 8 guineas that I ordered and they threw in 7 male BR's for warmth! Ugh! I called them about my order because I was charged for all 8 guineas. They were very apologetic and said they ran short on the guineas and it must have been an oversight when billing. My credit card was reimbused within 5 minutes of getting off of the phone. So far so good. Chicks are healthy and customer service was very pleasant. I will order from them again soon.

Never said they said that, they didn't have to. You don't get MG one day from a negative test result. They either picked up breeders somewhere that had an outbreak or had one in their own flocks in the past.

A positive test result for MG would be a sick bird in my opinion. It's like someone living with a disease... they cope with it but never fully recover... except for the fact that in chickens, it's a contagious disease. At ANY time a relpse can happen and potentially devastate their production... but since Ideal gets their birds dropped shipped if they ever get behind in production, the customers never know if an outbreak has occured...Also in this case it's potentially being spread all over the country.

Fattie.. have you ever delt with MG personally?

positive test result means that the birds are carriers..maybe not sick at the moment..but still carriers. OR am i wrong..maybe i am.. I'd like to know..

All i DO know is that i wont be ordering any birds from any hatcheries that have tested positive for MG and dont seem concerned about spreading it.
I dont want MG in my flock...I dont believe i have it now..and i'll do everything to aviod it...which would mean...no ordering from hatcheries..period.

OMG... sombody that sees my point of veiw!! Ha... I thought I was going crazy.

I never thought I would see the day that hatcheries thought it was OK to send diseased birds? What's the the deal?

RedHen,

Yes your right on track... even though they don't show signs doesn't make them ok... they still have a disease and potentially could harm any other flock that they come into contact with.

I have found three hatcheries so far that test for MG and a whole bunch of other diseases....

For example I get turkey's from a local hatchery that is globaly known and here is a list of what they test for...

Pullorum
M. Gallisepticum
M.Synoviae
M. Meleagridis
Salmonella Monitored
S. Enteritidis Monitored
Influenza Clean
Typhimurium Clean
H5H7

SO please tell me why this particular hatchery test for all of these stains of Bacteria... Viruses... ect?

If they have one of these things listed (from what I was told from managment) that the whole flock is destroyed as the risk are too great to take.

I asked her take on what she thought about hatcheries that know they have tested positive for a disease... and countinues to sell their products. Needless to say... I'm not going to repeat what she said, but she wasn't happy.

Honesty I feel let down, you would think that hatcheries would follow a strict bio secure program. What I have found is that most big commercial hatcheries do. You can't so much even go into the room where the chicks are with out putting on new clothes and a sterile room to be sprayed... some even make it mandatory to take a shower at work.

Smaller hatcheries are just like anyone else... Financially they can't afford to go through these kinds of measures. But there are ones that do go through the effort to make sure they sell disease free stock.

So far I have,

Moyers and Hoovers Hatcheries.... Along with a couple commercial hatcheries I deal with. However I'm sure there are more out there as I think Ideal stated that every hatchery doesn't test for MG, which from what I'm being told from various hatchery personel that this is furthest from the truth.

Glad to see someone seeing this the other way. I would never ever... sell anyone a bird with a disease even if they were a carrier.

Yes, a long time ago. My Polish tested positive even though none were sick and showed any signs of disease. These birds were already isolated from my other birds. The Dept of Ag said I had 2 options: kill all my Polish, disinfect/sanitizt their area very well, and not get any more Polish, or 2) never sell or buy any more birds, and dump feed into unproductive birds. I chose option#1. I burned the carcasses, and disinfected thoroughly, and upon final inspection and testing, all my birds tested negative. So far so good. I have to get them tested each year to keep my NPIP permit. I would never sell a sick bird (or a carrier) I would kill them first.
