They're a type of slide latch. You flip it up to open it and down and pull it to 'secure' it. Depending on of the prongs are bent enough, it either is pretty decent or almost useless View attachment 2912434

if i bend it do you think that will help? every one is in the almost useless stage at this point. i dont even have a drill lol, and am not handy with something like that, i was hoping someone had found a way to secure them and make them sturdier, it is really irritating, my pullets are sleeping in the house at night because i cant leave them in it overnight

I have. Still not guaranteed to work, and once it's figured put it will be useless, but takes more effort than brushing against them by accident.
