Hello,

At the moment I have a shop bought coop and run, but as I have more chickens now it needs to be upgraded.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make your own? Walk in one?

Thank you!

You could make the run and coop as one structure. Put large overhangs on the roof all the way around. Build it big!

If you're not inclined to build your own from scratch, one option would be to buy a shed (new or used) and customize it to serve as a coop. And a run can be made from dog kennels, with a bit of reinforcement.

Welcome to BYC!

How many birds?
What are your building skills?
What's your budget?

and.....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, then it's always there!

Hello! Thanks for your replies!

I live in England so the weather is very varied!

At the moment I have 17 hens and 1 rooster, these consisit of silkies, pekins and a mixture of hybrids.

( 7 are still chicks)

I wanted to make so I can walk into it but that it is all secure.

I live in the country so need to make it as secure as possible. I have a 6x4 shed that I’ve kitted out with air vents and laying boxes and perches.

I’m really looking to make a secure run that is big enough for all the chickens!

I don’t reslly have a budget at the moment!

Thank you!

For 18 birds, you're gonna need a bigger coop...more like an 8x10 shed.
Tho size and weather proofing of a huge run could help with that.

There are so many ways to make a chicken run.
Deciding on how to do the framework and what mesh you want to use(so you can build the frame accordingly) is the first step. Budget and/or building skills come into play there.

Here is my 400 sqft run, cost me about $300, but I had half the Tposts already and bent the rafters and built the couplers myself. No weather proofing, and it can be brutal here in winter, so coop has 6-8 sqft per bird for those really nasty days. But maybe it'll strike some ideas.
