Ideas on how to differentiate eggs?

Are you on UPA forum or a UPA member? I just went and searched "blind" (not sure if you can use search function if not member? Worth trying anyway) and found a couple old posts which said it turns up in purple and peach as well as cameo... used to be called the "death gene" or "cameo death gene." Because the blind birds died...

Apparently it is fairly rare. Affected birds should not be bred, of course.

Me? Or the OP? If me, I've used that forum occasionally.

Was thinking if you were on there, you could maybe find the posts... that's where I found the info about it occurring in purple... I remember reading the threads a couple years ago, so went looking to see if I could find them again.

I did a search here on BYC and found this old thread (may Deerman rest in peace

) which discusses the cameo blindness gene but questions whether it ever occurs in purple...

Both this thread and the ones on UPA mention the birds going white around the head area, and that somehow being associated with the onset of the blindness.

I'm really curious to hear whether this is becoming more rare as affected birds are removed from the gene pool? I don't think it was ever really common, but I've only been a pea-brain for a few years...

I have heard people say that is has mostly been bred out of the Cameos and that hopefully the same will be true of the Peaches.

That would work I think. I got her from a friend who didn't realize she had gone blind. I was supposed to pick up her other cameo at same time but the bird went spastic and I didn't want her breaking her neck. So missed the chance for a free cameo hen.

My friend just told me this was was "calm". It took me a couple days to realize the poor dear has the blind gene and I don't have the heart to put her down.

I try to take her out in the in the summer as I have time but it's a pain as she has to be babysat. The guineas want to terrorize her, the males think she is new meat, and if it gets sunset she panics and tries to fly up. Sigh. I wonder at her quality of life but she finds food and water quite well by listening to the chickens eat. Long as she seems content I will take care of her.

I swear I run a retirement home for disabled and over the hill birds!

Could you just put her in a pen with some non-aggressive chickens? If she's with the cocks, she's likely to get bred, willing or not. Can't imagine her powder-puffed butt will stay colored long enough to mark her eggs, and you'll have chalk all over the pen...

You all make me laugh! Powder puffed butt! I might use food coloring. I read reputable breeders will never knowingly sell one. Yea, did a lot of reading after I got her. :(

I watch her close, but only one picks on her is those darned guineas. I only have 2 left. I like them cuz they eliminate my chiggers. They pick on her more when I have her out.

I would never dream of hatching any babies from her, just because what I read. Apparently it doesn't get bred out, even to India blue, it's always there in offspring so that's why I was asking. I can't imagine such a beautiful animal doomed to blindness/this being grounded. :(

It's getting "bred out" (to the extent we hope that is happening) as birds carrying the gene are identified and removed from the breeding gene pool. You can't get rid of a gene by diluting it or breeding any bird carrying it to non-carriers...

Yea, before I did so much reading I was hoping it was not genetic, is kind of what I meant. You have to excuse me, still muddle headed from all this codeine.

No one has to fear I would ever hatch her egg, would never doom a peachick to that fate.

Now now! As much as I would like another guinea, me and Petey have an an agreement! He told me if I get any more he is leaving home! These two torment him to death! In fact, when I got this white goofy dumb cock and brought him home, Instead of being jealous, he was immensely relieved to have some else get their pretty tail pecked!!! We named Trouble Angel, but he is not! Should been Trouble! Lol.

Anyhow they are best buds!
