Bit of background:

Annie had been unwell with what the vet diagnosed as a respiratory ailment of some kind. She (and the rest of the flock) were being treated with Tylan and have been for 3 days. I had three Isas in one coop, two Australorps in another. The Australorps were 'integrating' as they were new. One of them is also sneezing (as Annie had been when we got her).

So, fast forward to today, all chickens in their coops, hubby was walking around the backyard on the phone talking to his aunt ABOUT the chickens. He turned away, talked for another minute or so, turned around again, and one chicken in each coop was just lying dead. The Isa was Annie - so not surprising really seeing as she had been sick, but it was still pretty terrible - she had obviously seized as her neck looked broken :( I looked her over physically this morning and she didn't seem any better, but no worse either. When we picked her up to bury her, liquid was pouring from her nose and mouth, and her comb was blue.

The OTHER one, however, was the NOT SICK Australorp :( Her name was Olive, and she had shown NO SIGN AT ALL of being sick, despite her pen-mate who was purchased at the same time sneezing. No liquid from her, and her comb looked fine - she just crawled into the corner and dropped dead.

Any ideas? I suspect Annie succumbed to the respiratory illness....but Olive dying at exactly the same time, literally within minutes?

Annie's death could have been related to the respiratory issue, but I would have expected more evidence of that - e.g. coughing, wheezing, breathing difficulty. What colour was this liquid?
At the same time, sometimes chickens drop dead - just like that. Same thing happened to my Gold Sex-Link, Bonnie. I found her dead under a shrub in the run, and her comb was blue, just like Annie's. A heart attack is possible, it would have cut off the blood flow causing a blue comb.
Either way, I'm sorry for your losses :( and good luck with the rest of your hens.

Annie had been coughing, sneezing and rasping for a while. She was sneezing when we bought her - didn't realise for a while that it was an illness rather than dust up her nose or something. One of the Australorps we also discovered sneezing when we got home with her - but it was the other Australorp that dropped dead. Can't call the breeder as he operates from a market - but you can bet he'll be copping a serve at the next market!

Definitely! I'm afraid I can't see a connection between the two deaths though :( sometimes these things happen...
