You absolutely need a trainer. You need to thoroughly explain the problems and their history of development to the trainer so that he or she realizes it is more than dealing with an average untrained dog. You need to speak to several trainers and ask about their philosophy and methods. You also need to ask their success rates, whether they offer refresher courses and for several references. Maybe even go and watch some training sessions.

Different trainers follow different methods, and I will almost guarantee that not all methods will work well on your dog.

His aggression is almost certainly borne from the fear he feels, and if you cannot resolve his fear issues, at least to a large degree, you will not be able to resolve his aggression issues.
